Environmentally safe de-icers

    I don't personally use any type of deicer around my home. But I thought those of you that do may want a environmentally safer alternative to salt. I'm sure you all know about the corrosive properties of deicers, but some people may not have paid mind to the fact that these substances are entering our waterways in increasing quantities. Deicers kill fish, birds and native flora. The following link will help you evaluate alternative chemicals that are available with the least derogatory impact to your environment.

    They tend to be a little pricier than non environmentally correct options but than so too is hybrid technology. ;)

    Let's not forget that regular deicing salt can enter the cement and rust the rebar, making the cement crack and fall apart.

    For awhile urea was thought to be safer than road salt. Actually not, although it's "safe" for cement, it can be washed into waterways and really bugger things up.
