I recall reading posts on priuschat where RPM values are mentioned.
As far as I know the Prius (at least my 2006) does not have an RPM counter.

    Am I missing something?

Yes. If you have a ScanGuage or CAN-view which are after market additions it is possible to read the actual RPM which are registered by the car. You can find out more about both by reading other threads on PriusChat and from the Internet

Edit (Allande): If you use the Search at the upper right of the page in PriusChat enter either term and the relevant threads should come up for view.

You can also install a generic tach. Its pulse input comes
from the IGF lead, the common feedback line from all ignitors.
Set it for 4 cylinders, and away you go.
