Darn -- you guys had got me all excited!!! It's actually not a motorcycle, though... It's a scooter.

But at least they're getting CLOSE!

    :)

    It's a scooter :(

It's not hard to get a bike up to 100mph, why can't they make one already that's EV or hybrid??

I have no idea what sort of range it gets since it is used pretty much just for 1/4 mile drag racing, but anybody see this EV motorcycle yet?

    0 to 60 in 1.04 seconds, top speed 155.78

You're wait is over, there is a full size EV motorcycle available. It is made by Brammo engineering the same company that sells the Atom car in the US.

Their motorcycle is called the enertia and a carbon fiber framed limited edition model will be available 1st quarter of '08 for $14,995. A steel framed version will be available in the 3rd quarter for $11,995

    The Specs:

    Top Speed 50 mph
    0-30 in 3.8 seconds
45 miles range at 25 mph
29 mile range at 32 mph
6 lithium Phosphate battery modules from Valence Technologies

That is expensive considering that you can get this:

It is Electric Motorsport's Super Motard that is available for $5800

    The Specs:
Top Speed 45 to 62 mph (depending on your selected gearing)
20 miles range at 52 mph w/ 165 lb rider (48V 33 Ah SLA battery pack)
They are working on LiFePO4 batteries

That's a great step, but still not enough to replace my bike right now. If it can't do freeway speeds, I'm flat!

I'm assuming they can't do a hybrid motorcycle because there is jsut too much stuff to pack in there. I don't think you can get an ICE, electric motor, battery pack, and all the hybrid stuff onto a motorcycle.

You assume wrong. Piaggio has announced plans for hybrid version of their 2 and 3 wheel scooters.

No reason you can't do the same thing with a motorcycle.

i know that many folks here only care about the notion of getting off of fossil fuels at ALL costs, but one thing that concerns me about ev motorcycles is . . . they're quiet.

no hold on partners, i'm not saying that i'm in favor of noise pollution, or the hogs that set off car alarms as they go by. however, i am a motorcycle rider, and i can tell you first hand that the single most concern of most motorcycle riders is not being seen or heard (aka - being run over and perhaps killed).

so, there is a reason for having a moderate amount of noise, if only to make folks aware that you are there, because 85% of the time, you are CERTAINLY NOT SEEN. i know this from experience.

i guess my point is, yes, i LOVE the idea of an electric or hybrid motorcycle, however, i would be VERY concerned about their safety. it seems to me that accidents and/or fatalities would increase.

    that's my 27 cents worth.

I think I might still go for an electric scooter some day... if my commute were more than 5 miles. As is, it's still faster for me (healthier too!) to ride my bike to work.

I know scooters have an image problem here in the U.S. but I see that as similar to the image problem certain cars face against other, bigger, more guzzly cars. Somehow the Italians have made scooters cool, so why not start a trend here?

Jhinton, good point about sound not being the first of your worries on a bike. It doesn't exactly equate, but being on a bicycle, nobody hears or sees me ever, so I've adopted a defensive riding style and always assume that drivers, pedestrians, et al. don't see me. That should be lesson #1 for bikes whether they're gas, electric, or human powered.

On the freeway people can't hear me coming even on my current bike. It takes a REALLY loud exhaust to be heard when you both are doing 75+

Lights and a good riding position make a much better difference.
