Featured EV sets Pikes Peak record

    No Tesla in the race this year. Was hoping someone would enter their stock Model 3. Someone did enter a 2018 Leaf (2nd Gen), although it does look a bit modified for the run. Yet to see a time on that.

    cue the VW hate.....

    the biggest advantage the EV racer has over the ICE is that there's nearly 50% oxygen deprivation due to altitude, the EV has no such downside. And with it's motors & pack set lower than possible with most ICE - the only question now is which EV will beat the next.
    AND . . . . VW didn't even have to cheat !!

    And not under ideal track conditions in the middle of the course during the run. More time left on the table there.

    It must be run by Gasser fanboys.

    So that electric car quickness doesn't get lost, we might also consider one of the Premier / huge test tracks in Germany, which now - regarding production street legal cars, that record is ALSO heldby an electric car;

    • 12.9 mi (20.8 km) - Nurburgring ring
    • 12.4 mi (20.0 km) - Pikes Peak race
    Retune the car for lower attitude and turns, Nurburgring is calling.

    In June the phev - porsche 919 evo posted the fastest lap at the Nordschleife (north loop of Nurburgring used to measure these things). This is a modified version of the lmp1 919 that porsche raced until last year. Porsche dropped out of lmp1 to focus on formula E (all electric instead of phev). The main thing they changed was increasing the battery to 2.4 kwh, bigger than race rules allowed. Toyota could probably do the same thing to the TS050 to give porsche a run, but toyota is still racing these cars.

    This was the first race car to do the Nordschleife since the porsche 968 did it in 1983 as part of qualifying for the last race held on the track. That record stood until the 919 evo. Mercedes is coming out with the project one which is a street legal version of their winning F1 car but with a 4 kwh battery and detuned engine so it can last for years instead of a race. It likely would have beat the record if porsche hadn't run their real race car. It should easily be the fastest street legal lap on the track.

    Since vw group owns porsche, no reason to waste money modifying a car that likely won't do as well as the 919 evo.

    The EV record for that course is the nio -ep9

    The courses are quite different the nurburgring north loop is highly technical with 300 meters in changes of elevation, and hairpin turns and straightaways. Cars can breath and aerodynamics work like they do at sea level, and there is 0 net change in elevation in a loop. Pikes peak is more of a mountain climb with curves and 1440 meters gain in elevation to 4,300 meters where even turbo chargers have trouble breathing and aerodynamics work differently than sea level.

    The 919 evo used active aerodynamics and likely with differen aerodynamics beat the vw on the pikes peak run, but it was not built for that type of race. Instead VW built something just for the pikes peak run.

    VW needs a lot of power for that climb, and some funky aerodynamics for the altitude. Its mainly a parlor trick, but one thing is true. A bev or a phev is much better suited for such drives than a normal hybrid or ice vehicle.

    Now porsche is concentrating on formula E. That car due out next year, likely could be modified more easily to do the Nordschleife. Its technology unlike the VW I.D. R will make production in the Mission E, like the 919 was sold in limited production in street legal form in the 918. Really you need a big battery or a phev to race on such a track. Time trials are something else. The formula E rules have 54 kwh batteries, the mission E will have a 95 kwh battery since it is not restricted to the weight or energy limits of racing.
