Report: California has worst soot pollution in nation

LOS ANGELES A report finds California has the worst rate of soot pollution in the United States.

Environment California's report "Plagued by Pollution," lists data of fine particle, or soot pollution, from environmental agencies across the country.

The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area ranked as the nation's top offender for soot pollution among large metropolitan areas. Pittsburgh ranked second, followed by the Los Angeles-Orange County area.

According to the American Lung Association, soot pollution can lead to serious respiratory and cardiovascular problems, including heart attacks, strokes and asthma attacks.

The report blames California's power plants and large numbers of diesel trucks, cars and ships for air pollution.

Luckily,to help measure and identify the various kinds and sources of soot, we now have millions of sophisticated soot collectors. They're called "cars".

Cars can be seen on every street in the L.A. Basin, noiselessly performing their primary task: collecting soot. (Some cars, the ones with wheels on them, and which haven't been stolen and relocated to another part of the Basin, actually carry passengers from place to place. But that's a sideline for most.)

Write "wash me" with your finger on the trunk or door of any car that hasn't been washed in 72 hours or more. What makes this possible? A magic finger? No!

    Soot.

I fight soot by chewing my soot particles thoroughly, transforming them into a dark paste. Within 48 hours they're deposited into the sewage system, never to be seen in their primal, sooty state again.

No, now they're part of another environmental delight: SLUDGE.

Double "ew!". Pronounced "W". Our 43rd president.
