I refuse to have a fax machine in my house.
Running down to the local UPS store, to pay dollars per page is nuts.
Internet fax solutions are expensive for the odd fax I have to send, and Mac OS X is poorly supported, if at all.

Things were looking grim, even after a couple of hours scouring the web, until I remembered that my Mac has a modem port I have not used in years. So I plugged into a wall outlet, and let the built-in faxing software of OS X have a go. Lo and behold, fast and good quality (at least so far as fax goes). Through VoIP, no less.

I'm impressed, although I still hate fax. For those who had forgotten (like me), the system level fax software is accessed by choosing print... from any application, and clicking the PDF button that opens up a menu with a fax PFD option. I reduce the file size before sending by choosing colorsync in the fax PDF dialog box, and 'reduce file size'.
