Tesla exec tells it like it is
Source: Tesla Tells Detroit To Stop Fighting Electric Cars
A top Tesla exec said Friday that traditional automakers have stunted electric vehicles by building bad cars, lobbying against new environmental rules and attempting to circumvent ones already in place.
“We want other manufacturers to succeed,” said Tesla Vice President Diarmuid O’Connell at the Detroit Athletic Club. “But there is nothing in their design that is viscerally appealing.”
Part of Tesla’s long-term plan, O’Connell said, was to start with a ground-breaking vehicle but expensive Tesla Roadster, then build a more luxurious but less expensive vehicle like the Model S and Model X and then, eventually, create a vehicle like Model 3, a $35,000...bwilson4web Nov 22, 2015 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 17,596 Likes: 2 Replies: 245 -

Honda Clarity Plug-in
Source: 2018 Honda Clarity: Honda's new plug-in gets 47 miles of pure electric range
Honda ... 2018 Clarity Plug-in Hybrid. It can go 47 miles on a single charge. When it arrives in dealerships later this year, the Clarity will boast an EPA fuel economy of 110 combined mpg-e, with a gas-only city rating of 44 and 40 highway with a combined 42 mpg. . . .
"We think the combination of a class-leading 47 miles of all-electric driving range rating and a large five-passenger package will give us an advantage in the plug-in hybrid game," said Ray Mikiciuk, assistant vice president of Honda Auto Sales at American Honda Motor Co.
The Clarity will withstand a road trip.... -

Consumer Reports' Highest-Rated Car-Ever

Tesla Model S P85D Breaks the Consumer Reports Ratings System
A surprise? CR car testers are often slanted to the gear head mentality - so it was unusual to see they rated it above their scale of a perfect 100.

Toyota Believes Fuel Cell Prices Will Match Hybrids
Toyota - skeptical about all-electric cars, but amazingly optimistic about hydrogen fuel cell cars.
According to Matt Harrison - Executive Vice President, Sales, Toyota Motor Europe, the Japanese manufacturer believes that within 10 years, prices of hydrogen fuel cell cars will match hybrid car prices.
"By the third generation we fully expect fuel cell costs to be comparable with hybrids. We believe fuel cell vehicles have a huge potential,"
When we look at the current prices in the U.S. the FCVs cost roughly twice as much as regular hybrids:
- Toyota Mirai (FCV): from $58,500 ($43,500 after deducting $15,000 in fuel over three years)
- Toyota Prius (HEV): from $23,770

Very few EVs qualify for the federal tax credit as of 2024
Currently, very few EVs qualify for some federal tax credit, let alone the full $7,500 tax credit. It will be a while before domestic mining of lithium and production of lithium cells begins for more EVs to qualify for the tax credit under the inflation-reduction act.
We’re down to just a handful of EVs that qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit in the US—The Verge -
Not alone in feeling that Toyota is missing the EV-boat (article)
I want an EV. And since my Prius, I'd love it to be a Toyota.
But there are none.
Today I found this article, supposedly Toyota is lobbying against EV's. Not in the US myself, so I don't particularly care about the lobbying, but I had expected Toyota to be more technology driven instead of dragging its feet. And actively sabotaging, sorry, lobbying against e.g. California's right to have stricter emission rules is something I would not have expected.
Is it really that bad? From what I read here, people with the Mirai's are left in the cold as well. (I have a dislike for H2 for practical reasons and a total lack of objective reporting in newspapers about the downsides of H2, but our government is pushing it for some reason (also some lobbying going on???)).
BTW, unlike the US (or the US portrayed in sitcoms/movies), people here don't buy new cars very often, partly because they... -
Solid-state battery wars
Several companies are claiming that they are near solid-state battery breakthrough. However, QuantumScape is currently the only one with actual data presented. We will see who will eventually win the war.
In any case the current lithium-ion battery technology will be obsolete in about a half decade, as it has many problems—slow charging, capacity loss, fire hazard, low power density, etc. Solid-state batteries will exclusively power the EVs of the very near future.

Toyota testing new solar powered Prius
"Considering that Toyota rates the pure electric range of a standard-issue Prius PHV at 68 km (42 miles), or 25 mile EPA, the bottom line of this experiment is that with those new solar cells, owners of a plug-in Prius would no longer have to plug in. On a fair-weather day, the juice would be provided by the sun, a big improvement especially for people who don’t have their own garage. The solar roof could morph from mostly a marketing-device to a helpful feature."Suddenly, Solar-Powered Cars Have a Bright(er) Future - The Drive
I'm not sure covering the rear window with a solar panel is a good idea. I would like to see panels that slide down over the front and rear windows when you park. At any rate, new, high-efficiency thin film solar cells could make for a practical solar-powered PHEV. My car gets parked outside and is only driven every few days. This would...Prius Pete Jul 5, 2019 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 22,196 Likes: 4 Replies: 191 -

Tesla is Going Out of Business, says former GM Vice Chairman.
11/17/2017: Tesla is 'going out of business,' says former GM exec Bob Lutz
Tesla is a "losing enterprise" that won't last, Bob Lutz, former vice chairman of General Motors, told CNBC on Friday.
"The company, folks, is going out of business. At this rate they'll never get to 2019," the well-known Tesla skeptic said in an interview with "Power Lunch."
Among the issues facing the electric-car maker are fixed costs that are out of control, an inefficient manufacturing operation and no dealership network, Lutz said.
Plus, there's nothing about Tesla (TSLA) that can't be easily duplicated by other automobile companies, he argued.
"There is no secret sauce in Tesla. They use the same lithium-ion batteries as...exstudent Nov 18, 2017 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 13,401 Likes: 0 Replies: 187
