2023 Prius to launch plug-in hydrogen electric vehicle. Corolla to offer hydrogen combustion engine
Per Forbes:
Toyota will be offering the next generation Prius as a hybrid hydrogen electric vehicle, battery electric for short trips such as commuting with a hydrogen fuel cell (presumably?) for longer trips. It appears this will be in addition to the next generation of the gasoline-electric hybrid system.
The Corolla will be offered with the option of a more powerful turbocharged gasoline engine or, in 2023, a hydrogen internal combustion engine in an unknown configuration.JosephG Sep 2, 2021 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 22,422 Likes: 0 Replies: 117 -
The Problem(s) with Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)
I have been contemplating a BEV as my next purchase. But there are pitfalls that I see, including this one:
- A BEV out of fuel (lack of sufficient charge) cannot be restored to running condition as a roadside service. The car would have to be towed. This is not a small problem. Not only is this expensive, but would clog highways with disabled cars for a longer length of time than a gas and go.

Long-Range EVs Are The Antithesis Of Efficiency And Sustainability
"...our planet can’t produce enough technology metals to accommodate a widespread transition to electric drive. Making a few hundred thousand or even a few million EVs a year isn't a major problem, but a global transition to an all-electric future is a pipe-dream, a quantum leap from the possible to the absurd, a fairy castle in the sky."
Long-Range EVs Are The Antithesis Of Efficiency And Sustainability | Seeking Alpha
This article agrees with Emissions Analytics that hybrids are a better way to go than long range EVs. Batteries and the materials to make them are limited. From the climate change and overall sustainability points of view, Toyota is right to push mass-market hybrids instead of EVs.Prius Pete Jun 20, 2019 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 9,343 Likes: 1 Replies: 115 -
August EV Sales
August Sales! See the chart in full on InsideEV
From InsideEV's:
We estimate a total of 36,380 plug-in electric vehicles were sold in the U.S. in August, compared to last year’s 16,514 and last month’s 29,514. Based on automakers’ sales reports and our estimates, 190,046 plug-in cars have been delivered through the end of August 2018. Needless to say, it was the best month of all time by a long shot! Not to mention the extreme level of other records broken.
Now, four out of five months in 2018 have claimed a spot on our list of top months of all time for U.S. EV sales.

Four-time Tesla owner opts for Prius Prime
Our very own four-time Prius owner @bwilson4web has opted for a Tesla, but this four-time Tesla owner has opted for a Prius Prime.
4-Time Tesla Owner Opts For New Toyota Prius Prime Plug-In Hybrid-Electric Vehicle | Torque News
By the way, I am now a two-time Prius Prime owner, and I am loving my 2021 Prius Prime Limited Blue Magnetism with its sound steering, ton of advanced features, and amazing turquoise color.
I have doubts about if I would like the Tesla Model 3. The laptop-screen controls are scary, weird, and potentially dangerous, and I need the blind-spot monitor (BSM), which the Tesla Model 3 doesn't have. Don't Tesla Model 3 owners feel like they are sitting in a bare empty room with a laptop when they get into their car? This is not to say that I won't buy a Tesla in the future, but I have my reservations. Perhaps...Gokhan Mar 31, 2021 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 10,515 Likes: 1 Replies: 113 -
Dead: Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV
While I understand they want to offer more attractive and useable vehicles, the Bolt had a good price point with federal credits. The new vehicles will be much more expensive.

Cadillac, the latest Tesla killer
Source: Exclusive: GM's Cadillac will introduce EV in fight against Tesla - sources | Reuters
Cadillac is expected to become General Motors Co's (GM.N) lead electric vehicle brand as the largest U.S. automaker gears up to introduce a new model under that luxury marquee to challenge Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), two people briefed on the matter said Thursday.
GM is set to announce Friday as part of an investor update that a Cadillac will be the first vehicle based on its forthcoming "BEV3" platform, the people said. The vehicle platform is the basis for vehicle underpinnings, including the battery system and other structural and mechanical parts.
GM is not expected to disclose on Friday additional details, including precisely when the Cadillac EV will be built, whether it will be a crossover or sedan, or where...bwilson4web Jan 10, 2019 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 8,052 Likes: 1 Replies: 112 -
Dead “robots” pack the Chicago Supercharger stations
This is not a problem for me in Southern California, but it looks like the current-state-of-the-art BEV technology is far from being ready for prime time in extremely cold weather. I can’t imagine what a pain it was for these drivers. I wonder how my 2021 Prius Prime would charge in that cold.

Hybrids offer fastest route to reduce CO2, says Emissions Analytics
"Plug-in hybrids are the next most effective after that, but only if they are operated entirely on battery, which is hard to enforce in practice."

CR on Driver Assist Systems
Source: CR Rates Active Driving Assistance Systems - Consumer Reports
It’s equal parts eerie and amazing to experience Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving feature, as it takes over your car’s steering, braking, and acceleration while you travel down the highway.
The eerie part is watching the steering wheel turn back and forth on its own, making micro-adjustments to keep the car in the center of its lane, while the system also slows down or speeds up to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. The amazement soon follows: With your hands off the wheel and relaxing on the armrests as the automated systems take charge, you might start to believe that the age of the self-driving car is finally upon us.
But while BlueCruise’s capabilities are impressive and can make driving more relaxing, cars...bwilson4web Jan 26, 2023 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 11,104 Likes: 1 Replies: 101 -
Conditions best for Eco, Normal and Power mode
I am new to hybrids, I have my Prius Prime Premium for 3 weeks now. It seems to me there are advantages of using each mode in different conditions but I read some saying they are always in Eco. For instance I live in a hilly area,if I'm doing 30 mph up a hill, Eco mode is struggling unless I happen to be in EV. Even in Eco EV the coach is telling me to crawl up the hill. Can someone explain this? -
Hertz is selling 20,000 electric vehicles to buy gasoline cars instead
What is news to me is that Hertz stated that Teslas are getting into more crashes than other cars.
“Besides costing more to repair when they’re damaged in a crash, Scherr also said, EVs are also getting in more crashes. Again, Teslas, which make up 80% of Hertz’s EV rental fleet, are mostly the problem in both these areas, he has said.”
I wonder why this is. Could it because of
- unconventional, center-touch-screen-based controls that drivers are not used to?
- distracting center touch screen?
- drivers not knowing how to operate Autopilot?
- Autopilot itself getting the car into crashes?
- lack of a conventional blind-spot monitor?
- Teslas being driven faster and more recklessly as they are considered to be sporty cars?
- other reasons you can think of?
- a combination of the above?
Hertz is selling 1/3 of...
