    RAV4 Hybrid is No. 2 (ex RAM diesel)...that's big

    OK so we have a new Toyota Hybrid RAV4 (abbrev. R4H?) so that is stealing some Prius v sales. If we add RAV4 + Prius sales it's not too bad for Toyota hybrid sales overall, considering the low gaso prices.

    As a general rule of thumb, a new car has about 3-4 months of outstanding sales before it slides down to its regular position in the pack. I would hold off on reading too much into the RAV4 results but they do look (and I like) good. Considering how the Highlander has been under performing . . . it is a good start.

    The Highlander is available only in the overpriced Limited trim. Poor sales shouldn't be a surprise.

    Keep in mind that February had the all those Presidents' day sales.

    if you look at hybrid and phev fusion (hybrid + energi) you get 2696 which is
    232 more than rav4 if you count that way ;-) far behind the 7169 for the prius liftback even without counting the wagon (prius v).

    I would say combination of low gas prices and the rav4 hybrid/nxh combo, should keep rxh/hihy sales low. If you want gas milage people are down sizing from the medium sized to the still very big cute utes (rav4, cr-v, escape).

    I mean the hihy has an expensive hybrid system that beats the cr-v by only 1 mpg. If that 1 mpg is important the 5 that the lower priced rav4-hybrid should draw off hihy/rxh buyers.

    I think the missing hybrids are lack of national availablity of the gen IV prius. The ioniq is only supposed to sell 77,000 world wide in hybrid, phev, and bev form. That means maybe 4000/month in the us on average, or only a few hundred more than the fusion in a bad month like feb.

    thanks. looking at everything, 2016 vs 2015 looks pathetic. and that's with a much milder winter in the north.
    volt and fusion energy look fabulous. i can understand volt with new model boost, but whats going on with fusion?

    Near as I can tell, the earliest PriusChat buyers were the second week of leap-year, February. My local visits didn't find a Gen-4 Prius until the third attempt. It will take 30-45 days to clear the Gen-3s and build up an inventory of Gen-4 against the Prius sales.

    Actually, I was poking fun at the recent Ioniq thread:
    It so reminds me of the 1980s "Beta release" articles or the play,'Waiting for Godot.' But I've always enjoyed the absurd including movies such as "If" "Catch-22" and "Putney Swope" and four years in the Marine Corps.

    Regardless of what entertains me, my understanding is by the end of March, the Ioniq may actually be on stage . . . in effect where the Gen-4 was in September 2015. If past is prologue, the Ioniq should have:
    • March 2016 - "stage release" (Sept for Gen-4)
    • May 2016 - "press drive day" (Nov for Gen-4)
    • August 2016 - "first sales" (Feb for Gen-4)
    As for the Prius hatchback sales, there are rumors we may see gas prices rise . . . just in time for the usual, annual price increases as the Summer season approaches. Also a perfect time to help increase Gen-4 sales if Prius sales are partially driven by increases, not just the absolute gasoline price. <grins>

    I give up trying to understand since I figure FORD and GM know what's going on but they are not telling the public. Normally what I seem to see is huge California sales first quarter/first half of year, and later in the year a little more spread out. So after March 31 we can see if these PHEV sales are high in CA (PHEV was 65% CA last year!). Is that when lease companies buy the cars? who knows

    The reason I look at the four month trend is to avoid single data point errors:
    • one month does not a trend make
    • comparing month-on-month over a year is too long to see an early trend
    So patience makes sense and April will be here soon enough.

    someone bought an odd car like that a year or two ago, to convert to ev. an old saab or volvo or something. but i haven't seen any progress reports. otoh, we should be right around the corner from bill resuming the firebrid project.

    PHEV sales were 65% in CA last year.
    Hybrid sales got up to 31% in CA alone in 2015.
    Gotta believe we could hit 40% hybrids in CA this year or next.

    When are people going to wake up, and change regulations. Basically cali is jacking up the price of gas, but the money is magically disapearing.

    Yikes don't people know diesels are dead for sportscars. That thing looks like a porsche and delorean mated in the 80s and the doctor was too scared to just let the baby die. The bmw i8 and 330e are the cars fisker hoped to make.
