I've finally figured out how to craft and load custom ringtones on my corporate iPhone:
    • personal (wife) - dog bark (her pets), vibrate
    • contact list (corporate) - 'Whip It' Devo, vibrate
    • all others - 'On the turning away' Pink Floyd, faint, no vibrate
An iPhone 4, the 'free' instructions left a lot to be desired. But the overall flow:
    1. Select the clip from the music - I'm using Quicktime
    2. Drop the clip into iTunes music to forward to iPhone
    3. Use a 'free' clip generator to make the "*.m4r" file.
    4. E-mail it back to iTunes Mac
    5. Copy in "Library" for 'Tones'
    6. Copy from Library/Tones to the iPhone/Tones
    7. Sync
More complex than I would have thought, it works and I can now build up my ringtone library. Candidate tunes:
    • Wife
      • Simply Irresistible
      • She Bop
      • Something Wild
      • Love is a Rose
      • Girl U Want
      • Girls Just Want to Have Fun
    • Work
      • Don't Bring Me Down
      • Working in A Coal Mine
      • Shiny Happy People
      • With A Little Help From My Friends
      • Monday, Monday
    • Telemarketers and scum
      • Big Clown Pants
      • Freedom of Choice
      • Helter Skelter
      • Telephone Line
      • W.S. Walcott Medicine Show
      • Blowin' In The Wind
      • I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better
      • Is There Anybody Out There?
      • You're No Good
If we could just set the voice mail, greeting message as a function of incoming phone number . . . telemarketers would get the maximum duration message. Others something more appropriate.
