Yesterday, I got down to one pip. I decided to fill up this morning before going to a blinking pip.

After 424 miles, I put in 9.1 gallons, averaging to 46.8 MPG. The MFD showed 48.5.

After the fillup, I drove my usual 25 miles to work. This is mostly highway, but it often bogs down. The elevation along the route ranges from 300 feet down to zero. There are no steep hills, mostly flat with some gradual ups and downs. Speeds varied from stop-and-go to 70 MPH. Average speed was about 55. When I parked in the garage in downtown DC, the MFD was reading 54.4. I'll be interested to see where I end up after commuting home this afternoon.

I suspect the difference in opinion between your calculations and those of the car may be partly due to the flexible fuel bladder. Tank capacity is not a constant in this equation, so while you put in 9.1 gallons at the pump, you may have only used 8.7 gallons since the previous fillup.

Yup. I understand that. I will be tracking both. From what I've read here, it seems my first-tank results are fairly typical.

Besides, I have no idea how full the tank really was when I purchased the car. When I filled it, I used the slowest setting on the pump. When it shut off, I added about another tenth of a gallon. (I always try to bring my gas purchases to the nearest $0.25. Price of gas was $2.979. The pump shut off at $26.72. I brought it up to $27.00.)

Yeah, I'd say the results are right on par with what others (myself inclueded) are seeing. Unlike you, I didn't have the presence of mind to keep track of the fuel mileage when I received my Prius, so I won't have any lifetime averages, etc.

First off, sorry you have to drive to DC. I live in Leesburg and commute to Chantilly. I've refueled 4 times so far with these results:

    Miles-----Gallons-----Comp MPG-----Refill MPG
    490-------9.010---------51.6------------54.38
    471-------9.137---------55.1------------51.55
    492-------9.604---------53.2------------51.22
    475-------8.571---------53.6------------55.42

Computer Average on 4 tanks: 53.14
Refill Average on 4 tanks: 53.38

I used to work 2 miles from home in Chantilly, but I was laid off. Now I drive 25 miles to DC for a much better job. With the long commute, the least I could do is drive a Prius.

To add a little fuel to Bluntguy's fire, my main reason for buying a Prius was to drive a clean vehicle. Saving money on gas came in second. HOV lanes came in third.

Your stats for 4 tanks are interesting. Sometimes the MFD is higher; sometimes it's lower.

I had similar results with my calculated mileage verses the MFD over 12 tanks of fuel. I stopped calculating at that point as the difference between the two were insignificant.

I'm not careful about my driving, and average 47.5 on the MFD.
