A team of drivers is attempting to drive a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid 1,000 miles on a single tank of gas this weekend. Ford engineers have hit 70 miles per gallon in trips by using hyper-mileage driving techniques. The group will need to average 57 miles per gallon to achieve its goal during the 43-hour attempt, changing drivers every two or three hours.

Meaningless, any car could be engineered with a big tank.

How far does anyone think a competent Prius Hypermiler could do with a 17.5 Gal gas tank?????

That's the size of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid gas tank!

If I had a 17.7gal gas tank, I'd go 1137.5miles if I drove it like normal.

You might go just slightly less w/ the extra 6 gal/36 lbs of weight in the tank, as well as the extra weight of the larger tank itself. Probably negligable, but at that length, I'd bet a mile or so ;)

    86 MPG after 4 segments.
Poo poo it if you wish, but it's pretty clear to me that this FFH is a serious competitor in the hybrid marketplace.

Honestly, I would give FFH a serious look except that the seating capacity in it is no more than our Prius (new, current, or previous generation). If the Mrs. wasn't dead set on an Estima or US equivalent, I'd probably have her test drive it.

Ford just posted a YouTube video. A very short documentary showing the first 1,000+ miles at better than 80 MPG.

Wayne's the same guy who drove the Prius from Chicago to New York on a single tank. It's not just a question of tank size but rather average mpg.

And yeah, I've been to Hybridfest where he's exceeded 100mpg in a Prius. All the same, 84mpg is pretty darned impressive.

He did the Chicago to NY trip, ~700miles, with the Prius, but only average ~76mpg. The Fusion beats the Prius by more than 8 mpg at 84 mpg.

Then why does the governement list the Prius as getting MUCH higher fuel economy than the Fusion?

Is the government testing flawed/wrong, or is this "test" flawed.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer. :D

Apparently, he arrived early this morning after having competed yesterday. Then they had him jump in with Wayne to take the car over the 1,000 mile mark.

Driving it at closer to 25mph than at 200mph!

    So,

Does this mean that the Jetta TDI folks at Greenhuman have to redo their Washington to California run with a 2010 Prius, 2010 Fusion and the Jetta?

Well, you could have watched the video where it said Carl just joined them... As for the backflip, he does it after winning races... I'm surprised he didn't do it after he stopped crossing the 1000 mile mark.

    Hats off to Ford!

The Chi-NY run was all interstate and still he managed those numbers. The Fusion route is much more rural and they're able to pulse and glide.

The way the EPA tests these cars is what determines their MPG rating. Give Wayne the same cars in the same conditions and you may find that one car does better on the HWY (like the jetta diesel), and another better on rural, and another better in stop & go/city.

And the Prius might not get the same range as the FFH on the same route b/c of the 60% smaller tank capacity, it would get better FE under the same conditions and with the same drivers.

Not comparable. Chicago-NY was highway, the Fusion challenge is city. Both cars do better in the city. Under different conditions, Wayne and others have pushed the G2 Prius to around 160 mpg.

On 2009 models, Wayne gets the best city mileage from the Prius, and the best highway mileage from the Civic Hybrid. His first impressions from winter test drives of the 2010 Prius, Insight, and Fusion did not change his preferences. The final answer will not be available until all of them are in customers hands for additional trials, and possible discovery of more 'Easter Egg' modes in each.
