I tried to post the shorter link in the other thread, but it seems to have made the website go even more ballistic. Now I can't yet edit my own reply.

    Will try here once more:

Ford's Hybrid Cop Car May Be Slow But It Still Smokes The Crown Vic

PS: it worked this time. Now, if only I could delete the bad ones on the other thread ...

The only thing slower than a Crown Vic is getting posts to load properly on this site today.

The whole Crown Vic thing always mystified me. Why would the Police choose a car that was pitifully slow for police chases, had terrible handling and couldn't catch a criminal if they went round a corner, and had appalling economy for doing patrols? And was too big for confined spaces but had very little room inside? Just about every car I can think of would have been a better choice.

The police may not have chosen the Crown Vic

It did have a huge trunk for all the gear they might need. In most cases the Crown Vic was replaced by a large SUV in police fleets.

Rest well assured that LEO does not usually get to pick his or her work car.

Can't find the picture in my computer now, but at Tianjin Airport, the police have fake Segways, with red and blue flashing lights and everything. They could race along at speeds of up to 2mph, apprehending any criminal who didn't know he was being chased and was just standing around.

The trunk* definitely makes a difference.

I think the best police cars for their time were when the British police got Volvo 850 T5s in the early 90s. 150mph and all the space you could ever need for traffic cones and handcuffs and a change of helmet.

Actually, this photo came from a good article on the subject. 57 Years Policing The Motorways

Time to bring out this Toyota Superbowl gem. I suspect the original we remove due to "political correctness" issues.
