Garmin kicked off CES today with not just a GPS unit but its first-ever iPhone navigation app. StreetPilot ($40, App Store) reflects Garmin's exit from smartphones and gives iPhone users full spoken, turn-by-turn directions. It provides many of the features of high-end GPS units, including lane assist, both 2D and 3D map views, weather and real-time traffic.
The app can use iOS 4 and will keep navigating if the user starts or takes a call in mid-route. It likewise taps into Apple's support for accessing the iPhone's music library and has access to the address book to drive to existing contacts.

At about 6 weeks into ownership of my 2010 w/nav, I get a "lovely" notice from Toyota that I could purchase an upgrade nav DVD for $200.

Now, I've never spent more than $1 for an app but there's a first time for everything and the Garmin will be just that. Thanks for the info.

Looks similar to the TomTom app that I've been using for a while. Hopefully someone will do a nice comparison of the two. I have to say I've been pleasantly surprised by the TomTOm app - in some ways it has been better than my previous OEM unit.

My GF has the TomTom app on her iphone 4.

We both find it to be unusably bad.

I already have the Navigon app, which I like but don't use very often. I might be tempted to try the Garmin software, just to compare.

Nice story, but what does it have anything to do with Prius/hybrid news? Belongs in another section.

After all the caterwalling on this site about the Prius nav system, I see no problem with putting it here. If some moderator wants to throw into FHOP, that's fine with me. I don't know where else it would fit. Personally, I take a much broader view of what news stories fit into the news forum.

I will never buy something from Garmin anymore. In 2007 bought a pda with built in navigation, they discontinued it in 2008 (can happen), and at the end of 2008 provided the last map updates. All new updates are in a new format and can't be used. Garmin could easily provide a firmware update or a converter for the maps, but isn't interested. Someday they'll change their maps again and leave their customers in the cold.

    How so?
The car kit definitely helps with signal strength btw.

Motion X is a 0.99 app that runs on iPhone and iPad and had been out for a while. Maps and info such as phone numbers and points of interest are dynamic so they are always up to date. Spoken turn by turn directions are free for 30 day trial then 19.99 for a year. I have a Garmin and have been running them side by side. Basically equal in routing and directions, Of course the huge iPad screen is a huge plus.

I use their tracker app for walks and hikes sometimes. It's OK, but I don't really like their somewhat confusing interface or its overall look.
