Gas storage -- short term -- theoretical, of course

So, I know storing gasoline in other than an approved container is a major crime. If I were to do so, I know I would probably get the US Marshals, ICE and maybe the county sheriff dragging me off to the Big House.

But, just in theory, you understand, would a day or so in a well-rinsed plastic Tide jug cause any trouble?

Again, just supposing, someone with an injured wrist cannot lift a five gallon gas can.

And, that someone had "someone" pour a half-gallon of gas into the plastic detergent jug for just three days.

O.K. So, hubby is going out of town. I will be alone this weekend. Supposed to maybe get a decent winter storm, which means power could be out.

I can usually get along, but this weekend, I would NEED to use the generator. Do you see where I am going.

Is the Tide jug going to melt in three days, or do something else stupid.

No, I do not want to buy anymore of the worthless CARB gas cans.

No neighbor to help a lady in distress? I am too far away.

Nearest neighbor is a Vietnam Vet who spends most of his time sampling Oregon's now legal hemp crop. Actually, he and I get along O.K., but he is partially disabled....and even if he could make it to my place if we had a major storm, he can't lift anything either.

Also, he lives about 3/4 mile away and would be facing traveling up my quarter-mile-long gravel driveway, which goes from 400 feet above sea-level to about 850 feet above sea-level in that distance and is usually impassable after a snow storm.

The next nearest is a mile away, you get the picture. Whatever happened to Uart, oh, wait, he is in Australia. :D

Then you should have only put half a gallon in the five gallon can, I guess. :D

If you pour a half gallon out of the 5 gallon can into each of 9 plastic jugs, then you will have a half gallon left in there. :D

Oh, yes, and post a no smoking sign! I guess that leaves out the nearest neighbor then . . .

    Hmmm,. thanks, I guess. LOL

Edthefox asked that I post a photo of the ice storm that put me in pain from January. I don't take many photos and had no pix to offer, but when it snowed last Sunday, a friend was over and she took a photo right when the snow started. It doesn't show a lot, but you can see one faint track of my driveway as it starts to wind down the ridge. The angle is a bit quirky, the driveway is about forty feet below from where she took the photo, past the string garden fence and down the slope.

OK in polyethylene. Thicker is better, and OP is on track there.

Those other-site comments identify styrene as bad choice. In Puerto Rico, where concrete roofs are flat and all leak, it is common practice to dissolve that plastic in gasoline to make a sealant goo.

Well, sometimes I do not see the forest for the trees. Hubby said he will pour most of a large can into one of the cars in the morning. Leaving a small amount in the jug. It will be light enough for me to handle.

Funny, he thought of it. But, I think I might of come up with it eventually, since it is sort of the reverse of Prodigyplace's one comment!

Thanks, all. But, still interesting in terms of gas storage, to know what you can do or not do, if you need to do it.

I have used the clear HDPE jugs (the thicker windshield washer jugs) last year when I was testing my gasoline for density and ethanol content. I had calibrated the jug with a Magic Marker, as I was also testing to see if the pump was giving a real gallon. By gosh, the pump was accurate.

    >>One thing to realize is that the professional Red plastic "CARB approved" gaso jugs have a special coating or treatment to minimize gasoline evaporation through the plastic. What I saw was every day losing some volume, adding up to about 5% volume loss of the gasoline after 7 to 10 days. It seems to be mainly the lighter butanes/pentanes which permeate through the untreated plastic, and those are higher in winter blend gasoline.

(Click on photo for larger image)

(Also I know the chemical hazards but this activity was messy and smelly at best. After this test I decided pumps were usually accurate and in future the I just used a regular gaso can and measured the weight to get density. Since I live in a RFG area, all grades have about the same density and etanaol content, so there is not much to test in my area.)

    Beat me to it....
I'd also buy a small "weed whacker" gas can for future use.

    household bottles to hold gasoline?

Maybe an inexpensive hand pumped gas transfer pump? Keeps the gas in the car tank where it belongs until you need it, and then you can take that half gallon at at time as you need it and it is always fresh (my problem with gasoline sitting around).

Don't know if the bladder in the GenII tank is a problem in threading a hose in, however. Anyone done that?

The solution for that is to have the hubby take the Prius and siphon his gas.

Gen2 they say you cannot snake a line in to siphon gas out. I am not aware of any Prius you could siphon out gaso like the old days. A pump to transfer from can into gaso tank has merit, believe you can purchase something like that.
