    Hi

I have a 2011 Gen 3 Prius and Father in Law has a 2016 Gen 4. On paper, ex: when you visit Edmunds.com Cargo Capacity, all seats in place for

    Gen 3: 21.6 cu.ft.
    Gen 4: 24.6 cu.ft.

so I put both cars side by site with a measuring tape in place and this is what I found.

all in inches (best measurements I could do)

    Gen 4 Gen 3
    Max floor Deep 34 34.75
    Max floor Wide 54 60
    Min floor Wide 37.5 38.5
    Min Height 19 22
    Max Height 25.5 27.5

So looking at those numbers, why are they saying more cu.ft in the Gen 4? Father in Law and I noticed this when I was able to put much more in my trunk are than he could.

As a bonus, on top of all that, Gen 3 has storage under the trunk floor for added space.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks

i think so. more cubic feet is just a new method of measuring. smoke and mirrors, voila! now you see it, now you don't.
from what i understand, the new independent rear suspension takes up a lot of room. did he get a spare tyre? if not, you can pull out the styro for more space.
tell him to enjoy the improved handling, and buy a pick up for hauling things. it's a sports car now, not a utilitarian vehicle.

I wonder if there is a difference with the rear seats down.
I have a Gen 4 (2017) but do not have a Gen 3 for comparison.
Perhaps we need to use a photo like the Prime thread.

The -reason- the actual space isn't like the measurements is the govt. method of measuring. They like to lie, as they are run by politicians. ;)

Toyota is caught in the middle, as they have to report per the regulations.

I would think the 4th Gen is "smaller" as far as what you can realistically fit.

You can have oodles of "cubic feet," but if it's not linear, what can fit in there is a ton of small stuff. Cubic inches, feet or cm is simply misleading

After having a Camry, with a nice normal trunk, my Gen4 Prius looks extremely tiny "back there" (with the backseat up.) I don't even call it a trunk. A few grocery bags, and a couple cases of water, and it's already full!

I don't put the back seat down flat, I don't want things flying around. And I also want the few items I keep back there to be hidden with the cargo cover.

I only keep an 8-pack of water in the car. I hope I never get stuck out on the road during an earthquake. Then I will wish I had that case back there. (And a few Snickers bars). :D

So, what is the verdict? Is Gen3 cargo space actually bigger than Gen4 despite some data saying otherwise? I just traded up my Gen3 to a new Prime. I am already hating small cargo space in Prime. I miss roomy Gen3 hatch. IMG_20170601_180559.jpg

i suppose it depends on which gen 4 version you're talking about, since they all have different floor levels.
and they moved the wheel wells, making the measurement area's different as well.

I didn't look at Gen4 Prius when I was at a dealer for Prime test drive. OK, which Gen4 has the largest cargo space? And comparing it to Gen3 Two, which is bigger? Mine was 2015 Prius Two until last Fri.

the configurations are in a sticky. the version without spare has the hatch floor about 2" lower.

that allows toyota to publish larger epa cubic foot measurement.
