I’m way out of my area of expertise here. Everything I know about hitch-mount bike racks is from last couple of days interweb searching. Last time I traveled carrying a bike was many years ago, put in bed of PU, bungy-corded it to prevent it sliding around, that was it.

Looking for feedback from those Gen 5 owners who’ve installed a hitch receiver (either 1.25” or 2”) and use a hitch bike rack. Type (hanging or platform/rack, tilt or not), make, model. Experience good or bad on scraping, hatch opening issues (if any) with bike(s) loaded, weight of rack, ease of install/remove, movement during travel, etc. Particularly interested in what @SXP has to say (1.25” receiver, 1Up rack – don’t know if a Quik Rack or Equip’D).

Use case for my daughter is a single mountain bike (a 1987 Stumpjumper, whatever that is, with a 21” frame, that simple AI robot tells me the wheelbase is 42”, IDK). Currently has a Honda Fit, she used a Saris Solo 1 hatch rack a few times but had paint scrap issues, so currently puts it inside her Fit (love those Fit ‘Magic Seats’). Doesn’t want a roof rack.

I’ve ordered a Torklift Central EcoHitch (2” receiver), should be arriving soon (sadly, no Black Friday sale on EcoHitches this year, just on truck/RV steps, so paid full sticker price, ouch).

I’ve never contemplated mounting anything off a hitch receiver on such a low ground clearance vehicle. I like the idea/design of the 1-bike 1Up Quik/Equip’D/HD, lightweight (under 30#), seems robust. Have seen a reddit user using a RockyMounts (looks like a Monorail 2 Inch but not sure).

Anyway, any and all feedback welcome.

For what it's worth, I don't have a hitch on my 5th Gen but did in my 3rd Gen that I used for a single-bike Kuat carrier. The hitch was a Curt. I understand that the 3rd and 5th Gens have the same amount of ground clearance. I never had a scraping issue with my Curt hitch or Kuat rack.

The Kuat tilts to allow the hatch to open up and it worked fine. I imagine the 1Up and Rockymount tilt too.

If your daughter's bike has fenders, I'd check to see how well the racks you're looking at work with fenders.
