Gen 7 Camry (and the 2nd Gen Camry Hybrid)

    The current generation Camry came out as a 2007 model and is definitely due for an overhaul.

    What are some things that you're hoping for on the new Camry Hybrid?


    Here are a few of mine that I can think of


    • 5.0L/100km (47mpg) or better (currently rated at 5.7L/100km [41mpg] in Canada). Ford's nipping at Toyota's heels with the FFH and the 2011 Elantra and 2011 Fiesta w/ SFE package can both do 4.9L/100km (48mpg) on the highway
    • Touch sensitive SKS lock
    • Better shaped trunk (hopefully they can find better ways of packaging the battery)
    • I expect all of the upgrades from the Prius to make the transition (exhaust heat recovery and cooled exhaust gas recirc)
    • Maybe paired to the new 2AR 2.5 litre engine
    • More exciting colours (No more Jasper Pearl type hues)
    • A few more luxury touches such as integrated mirror signals, LED headlights and maybe heated steering wheel or heated rear seats (it's a family car after all)
    • Continue its level of quietness. Please don't cut corners
    • Upgrade the interior plastics. It feels like a step down from the Gen 6 so I'm hoping the Gen 8 can step it up again
    • Would an AT package be too much for a Camry? (stepping on the Avalon's toes?)
    • Best-in-class aerodynamics (It's 0.27 right now. Let's see if they can bring it down to 0.26)
    • Lighter, more compact electric motor
    • 4WD-i option (why let Subaru have the AWD market to itself? They've brought down the fuel consumption of the new Legacy by imploying a CVT. It's competitive with other 2WD models. The AWD penalty is no longer there).
    • Current 0-60 is fine (I think ~8 secs?) No need to make it faster.

    i can't see much need for improvement. of course, mpg's are always welcome and they will have to at least keep up with the competition to keep our business. i would love to see the batteries disappear and have the regular camry trunk and pass through. other than that, the car has been phenomenal. what do you mean by touch sensitive sks? our camry has the 3 door sks jus like our prius?

    I dont know much about the Camry but I never liked how they made it so huge last couple of generations.

    it's not that much bigger than a prius, not sure what would be in between.:)

    Maybe from the inside, but from the outside it looks huge compared to a Prius. It's wide and tall. It's almost like those old cadillacs.

    A corolla would be in between but we don't want no stinkin' corolla.

    A current corolla is about the same size as the old camry's.

    I love my Camry Hybrid. Don't change the size. If anything, just make it quieter.

    The Camry is a strong car, well designed and in 4 cyl form very reliable. What is wrong with it? Not much, except I think it is one of the ugliest cars in the segment. That is personal I know, but I just think it bad.

    The midsized class is so heavily fought over with excellent contenders like the Fusion and the Sonata, now both offered in a hybrid.

    Toyota could possibly up the MPG of the Camry hybrid 10% or so with more Prius like features such as heat recovery and belt-less operation. That could put it at the top of the hybrid midsize class. Right now of the three (Camry, Fusion, Sonata), there is no clear winner as they are all excellent cars.

    Yeah but it does make for a very comfortable highway car :D.

    Same. Seems like hybrid sedans have an issue with battery location.

    Yeah but they're the black buttons for locking. The new Prius got rid of the black buttons and you simply touch the handle (at the lock sensor) to lock the handle.

    The Avensis. It is a lot bigger than the Prius. Hand washing the Prius then washing the Camry afterwards make washing the Camry a chore. I should wash the Camry first then wash the Prius. It'll make washing the Prius a breeze :D. Ours was a 2002 Gen 6 Camry.

    Actually because of the 0% 60 month incentive, it is actually a car I'm considering as well as the CT, Prius v, and Prius 4. The trunk space sucks, even the HS has more trunk space, by almost 15%.

    Yeah I'm gonna guess current. Good passenger space, not so much trunk space. It's decently shaped and at least it has a pass-through for skis/snowboards and similar items. The TCH would be the car for highway trips.

    definately. we take ours to florida every year, very smooth, comfortible and quiet. tracks great, easy driving. cloth seats are a little mushy, i wonder if we should get leather next time. it's funny, after having the car for 3 1/2 years, the trunk doesn't seem so small anymore.

    Our old Corolla had 12 cu ft and it was fine for most things but at that time, we didn't travel a lot so we never carried suitcases in it. Our Gen 6 Camry had 16 cu ft. and it was really nice to be able to throw in large, folded boxes in without worrying about it fitting (didn't quite work with the 14 cu ft Accord that my uncle had when we gave him the boxes back). I guess it depends on the depth of the trunk area, moreso than volume.

    Current. That and combined for rather steep discounts makes it interesting very interesting. Most of the ones I'm looking at, come with Nav and moonroofs. Don't know how the Nav stacks up to the Prius Nav but since its DVD based like the Venza and Prius I can only assume its the same. I've heard the CT is hard drive based.

    It should be the same esp. now that the Prius has swapped the dedicated MFD with a standard Toyota MFD (i.e. the one that comes with the navigation system).

    The CT is HDD based but there's no onboard music storage.

    Nice one. No 4WD or AWD and not quite sure what the interior will look like. And I was hoping for a bigger trunk.

    I knew 4WD-i would really be wishful thinking (even though they have AWD Camrys in their homemarket). There's always a sliver of hope that Toyota would surprise us and take that one step further, at least for those of us in northern climes and now that Subaru has essentially wiped the AWD penalty.
