If u hear a slight rubbing noise coming from your steering column and all system lights appear normal...hold onto your hat as your steering might be about to fail completely.

That was our experience with our 06 with 17k miles.

We thought the rubbing noice was the clock spring, squid, spiral cable,....

The dealer said it was the rack and pinion. 1700 miles later we lost steering pulling out of a parking stall.

If this happens to u do not spin the wheel. Take a picture of the dash lights and warn the tow truck operator not to spin the wheel. When the car gets to the dealer make sure he looks at the instrument panel and validates that it is normal.

Spinning the wheel will break the spiral cable, turn on the airbag light and cause tracktion to fail and increase your bill 450.00.

In our case, the spindle on the upper and lower shaft stripped which caused the rack steering to fail. It seems like a poor design which probably was the cause of the 1million recall of the 01 to 03 models.

Our cost was a 6 week delay and 1902.00 for the rack and pinion and another 450.00 for the squide.

    Hope this helps others.
