    OK, if gen II prius have the synergy drive, what kind of drive train did gen I have?

    THS - Toyota Hybrid System
    HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive) is just what they called THS version 2, I blieve. Most likely for marketing.

    Based on the way the competition is defining "generation", Prius is clearly on 3. And both "HSD" and "II" came about unrelated to technical achievements.

    Basically, the most appropriate label is "not the same".
