A dealer in my area has a new 2005 in the color and interior I was going to order - black w/beige and package 4. I see that there are a couple features in package 4 for 2005 that are not in 2006 and some in 2006 not in 2005. As well as the enhancements.

Main Q - The tax credit would apply to a new 2005 purchased in 2006, correct?

Other Questions - I can buy the 2005 for $1,500 - $1,700 less than the 2006 and get it now vs. waiting 2 months or so for a 2006. While I save money today, will the price 5 years from now for a 2005 with 90K vs. a 2006 with 90K be $2K or more lower than the 2006?

Does anyone use the back-up camera, one of the features added in 2006? Is it valuable? I would like the MP3 player plug, but I don't have an MP3 player yet. I do like the fog lights on the 2005 which are not on 2006.

Help! If I want the 2005 I must pull the trigger today or tomorrow. Thanks!

I would NEVER get a 2005 now at this time with all the 2006's available out there. Trust me. You could find a 2006 for yourself today. People fall off the list all the time and many dealerships aren't even taking lists. My friend the other day just called a dealership asking if they had one in stock, she was curious if she would have to wait. That night the salesman called her back saying they had one in because the man who was supposed to take it decided not to. I was actually pretty shocked how fast that was, but my point is, the 06's are accessible.

I think there are too many changes on the 06 not to get it. The back up camera is a wonderful feature and makes driving safer. Also, the minor facelift on the car makes it look a lot prettier IMO. Tail light change, silver grill, hybrid emblem ect.

If it's about the wait, I say go and try to find an 06 because you may surprise yourself. I am surprised 05's are even still available! For a difference of only $1500-$1700 between the two, go for the 06! That's my 2 cents.

There was a (base, whatever model has no extra features ) Silver '06 sitting at the Toyota Center in Columbia, SC Saturday when I was there for updating.

Not sure it's going anywhere fast, due to being base.

If anyone buys it, mention my name... ;)

    Jack,

Count me as one who bought an 05 instead of an 06. The 05 with pkg #4 has VSC. To get that on an 06 you would have to go up to pkg #6. My limit was 26K plus tax and tags. I could get an 06 pkg #6 for that price or for the same money get an 05 pkg #6 w/ NAV. I decided I wanted the NAV. The 06 with NAV was 28K+ and out of my price range. So getting an 05 gave me a lot more car for my money.

Also, since I tend to keep a car for 12 yrs, what it is worth in 4 yrs is not important to me.

PS - In PA we are seeing the 2005's get bought up very quickly because depending upon package they are selling $1000 - $2000 below MSRP.

Each person has a different idea as to what features are important to them - so I suggest you do a search on Prius 2005 Options and print out a list of what is in each pkg. Then compare them item for item to the 2006 packages before you make your decision.
