The best time to put solar panels on your roof is when you re-roof. The installation is easier, and will last longer.

There are many incentives out there - check with your utility company. Ours offers up to 50% off installation costs and pays you for the excess you bring into the grid.

I would also add that going solar thermal is the best kept secret in this country. The installed cost of an active system (where there are pumps to recirculate heated fluids) is between $2000-3500. Throw in a 30% fed tax credit and you're looking at $1400 - 2450 for typical residential installations. These system often cover 80-90% of water heating needs. Systems typically last 15-20 years. Why aren't there more of these systems out there?!? It blows me away. The gov't should really be talking these things up. So much NG could be saved for other uses if folks with NG water heaters had these systems on their roofs. Energy independence if nothing else.
