Toyota and GM have tried, but Australia is nearly impossible to do car manufacturing in anymore. The high costs, logistics, and the huge upturn in the value of their dollar has made them non-competitive. I had read somewhere where it costs GM more than $3,500 more to produce a Cruz there than elsewhere. It's fairly ridiculous now, as the Australian government continue to try and bribe the manufacturers with aid and incentives, after eliminating tariffs that made imports cost more.

I think it's a lost cause there now, they simply cannot compete much longer.
