I have had the wheels on for over a year now but my milage seems to get worse and worse. Nowaday I have to try very hard to get my avg. milage above 45mpg and driving normal at about 65-70mph I have been stuck at 41-43mpg for the last couple months. This includes warm days that have been between 70-80deg out so it's not like I'm driving in sub-zero temps.

I'm going to install the stock wheels and see if it changes much. :(

Any changes in fuel in your area?

I'm not sure how I would go about checking that. I'm sure they'l be changing to a summer formula but I've had consistantly bad milage for some time now.

I did have a thought while driving the car a few minutes ago. Does the ICE come on the charge the 12v aux battery? I have a rather large amplifier and even at low volume I'm sure it sucks up quite a bit of current. I'm wondering if the ICE could be coming on more often due to the current lose in the 12v battery?

I just installed new Centerline 17's and 205/45-17 Falcon tires, The last 75 miles with the stock set was 47.7 MPG. The last 75 miles over the same basic routes was 47.4 MPH. Very small sample I know, but so far I am very happy. This week I will take a several hundred mile trip at 70-80 MPH and see how that compares to the 45/46 I used to get on this trip......

Yes, the power for the 12V system comes from the ICE. A modest stereo in a normal car wouldn't make much difference, but with the Prius and a big amp, you may have the ICE kicking on just to counter the 12V draw.

It might be easier to turn off the amp for a week or so to see if your mileage goes back up. Changing out the wheels is a PITA.

I was told that California requires ethanol in their gas year 'round now. I'm assuming that still means 10% ethanol. You'd probably have to ask CA DOT about that to be sure.

Just how much current does it suck up. It doesn't matter whether it's coming from the 12V or not. Energy is energy. A kW-hour of electric energy requires much more than that from the gasoline. No real engine even approaches 50% efficiency. 12 V at 10 A is still only 120 W though. Well, even that is a fair fraction of the power needed to drive the car. Well at least 0.12 kW-hour is a fair fraction of what the HV battery holds.

That is what I noticed back when I first put them on but it's been awhile now and I thought maybe I didn't measure the difference correctly back then. Please keep me updated. Ohh, they look great. ;)

And people wonder why I got a hatchback... You never know when you need one of those bunnies to ride shotgun and who has time to stop and let em out of the trunk?

The amplifier is rated at 1500w RMS but I'm not running it that hard. I've never measure the current going to it to see if it is even high enough for the amp to reach it's rated 1000watts that I'm running it at. Just to test it out I am going to remove the speaker box AND unplug the amp for a couple tanks. Then if my milage goes back up I'l put the speaker box in and leave the amp off to see if the extra 90lbs of weight from the box is hurting me much. Then I'll plug the amp back in and see if my milage drops back down. I'l try to keep track of the temps as well since it is starting to warm up around here.

    Any other suggestions?

F8L, what tire pressure are you using?

46/44psi My tires are rated at 50psi. The tread wear has been excellent. I've put around 15k+ on them and there is no part of the tire wearing faster than another and I have yet to rotate them. Then again, with bunnies swapping from the hatch to the drivers seat so often I'd say the tires are pretty well loaded all the time. I thought about 46/46 but the models are pretty tiny.

I just went and removed the box and disconnected the power wire for the amplifier. I bet all four of those 40amp fuses were not happy to see their "food" go away

    *update*

I have my stereo stuff unplugged, speaker box removed and I kept the radio and headlights off today.

I started my morning commute with the MFD at 43.3mpg and just about 1/2tank of gas. I drove the 1st 10miles at 65mph with cruise control on then hit the reset button on the MFD.

I continued to drive the last 55miles at 65mph with the cruise control on. The last 3 miles of my trip is on a slight incline. I pulled into the school and the MFD read 50.0mpg avg. 55miles. Average temperature was 60-65deg.

On my way home tonight I had to turn on the headlights (no radio) and did my usual commute back home (65miles or so) at 65mph with the cruise on. The temp was 60-66deg. When I got home the MFD read 47.4mpg.

My conclusion: I don't have enough real data to make a conclusion so I will keep testing this idea for another two tankfuls. I will maintain a 65mph speed and use cruise control whenever possible. My guess at this point is that I may be losing about 2-3mpg avg. but it is too early to tell. :)

Just as an updat:: I just returned from 250 mile trip. 90% of which was 65-75 MPH. MPG was 45.6 which is 1/2 to 1 MPG LESS than I used to get with stock wheels. I drive 15,000 miles a year, so at $3 a gallon the new tires are costing me about $18 a year....Well worth the much improved highway handling.....

Were temperature, humidity and elevation the same as what your saw with your old milage?

Then it is probably not having much of an effect, at least not in the real world.

This also compares with my original conclusion that the new tires/wheels didn't have an effect on my milage either.

I just burned though another tank and I have 3 pips left with 392miles on the odometer and the MFD says 48.3mpg avg. The temps were higher yesterday and today so it is hard to say for sure but I think the stereo is having a noticible impact on my milage.

I can answer this one for...I only have a small amp (base tube), but I also run my computer, a small cig lighter powered frig, and a gps.

What I have found is that when I have all my devices going, and I am just sitting in park, the HV bat levels deplete more rapidly. It must be replenishing the 12v supply. This in turn requires the ICE to turn on more frequently to maintain the charge.

I have noticed about a 0.5-1 MPG hit from just running all my electronics. And about a 3-4 MPG hit for changing the tires (I run GY triple-tread assurance). And I carry about 200lbs of gear in the back, because I do a lot of long distance drives, I am believe that's hitting me at about 1-2 MPG.

My lifetime is at 45.3MPG at 105k.

I noticed this too the other day while just sitting in a parking lot with he HIDs on. So I guess I'm going to have to write up a new thread letting people know that this is a real possibility. Hmm, I'm so not in the scientific mood. lol

Thank you for your input. :)
