Several of us have gone in past years. Definitely a fun event. If you are on the cheap, you can camp out at beautiful Watkins Glen State Park. Something to look forward to as we slog through the rest of this winter.

2009 Green Grand Prix: Call for entries

An invitation to the May 2, 2009 Green Grand Prix in Watkins Glen

We still host the only competitive event of its kind in the nation (and quite possibly the world). In 2008, GREEN GRAND PRIX DAY was recognized by the New York State Legislature with a special resolution. I’ll try to keep it short by saying that the Green Grand Prix continues to expand and for 2009 we have two competitive events for you to choose from: ( our entry fees have not increased)

    • The Doris Bovee Memorial Road Rally

This is the familiar Time- Speed- Distance Road Rally generously hosted by the Glen Region Chapter of the Sports Car Club of America. For 2009, it will start and finish at the Racing Library at 610 South Decatur St, Watkins Glen, not at the Glen Motor Inn.

    • The Chicago-Soft Green Grand Prix Fuel Economy Run

This is a new event and will be run at roughly the same time as the rally, but starting from a different place. (that’s why the same vehicle can’t enter both events) This Fuel Economy Run will start from the Glen Motor Inn, go around the 80 mile perimeter of Seneca Lake, and finish at the Racing Library before the Road Rally cars finish. Participants will attempt to set fuel economy records for their particular class of vehicle. We will have many categories. This event will have a time constraint to make sure that participants maintain a reasonable average speed. Those of us that are not interested in reading cryptic directions now have an easier- to- manage competitive event! No navigator needed.

We intend to increase the “fun factor†by encouraging the use of camcorders throughout both competitive events and afternoon activities. (We may even award prizes a few months later for the best short videos submitted. Perhaps some can be posted on YouTube)
Lipstick cameras, helmet cameras and just about any other in-car cameras are encouraged. I’m sure many of you could end up with very entertaining conversations
(arguments?) during the rally or fuel economy run!
We’ve also learned from the past, so our afternoon exhibits have been expanded to include our Schuyler County Earth Day Celebration and we will have a Speaker’s Tent on our grounds instead of using the school auditorium.

All entry fees will be tax- deductible as in the past. You may view the schedule for the May 2, 2009 Green Grand Prix and register on-line at our website . www.greengrandprix.com
