I couldn't believe my eyes last night. Was watching the History Channel last night and a commercial for a local Hummer dealer came on, to be specific it was Greenbrook Hummer on Rt 22 West in Greenbrook, NJ.
The spokesperson is giving his little talk and he says "The new H3 more environmentally friendly than the Toyota Prius" just as the same thing flashed on the screen. I almost fell out of my chair, who's he kidding, an H3 more environmentally friendly than a Prius. The H3 get what 12-13 MPG that means over 100k miles it will burn about 8000 gallons of gas compared with, even figuring on the low mileage side 2222 gallons of gas for the same 100k miles in the Prius. So which car is more environmentally friendly? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.

The guy setting up the script for the commercial likely read the famed CNW Marketing report. Look in the Hybrid News forum and you'll find the sticky at the top.

It does get 20mpg on the highway, let's not forget. Which is decent for that type of vehicle.

But yeah, no one is going to believe that so don't get all worked up over that.

GM's still quoting their OLD epa guestimates regarding 20mpg ... which is an irony because GM & other traditional guzzler builders wanted new values put into effect due to the old Prius EPA mpg blowing others away.

No they're not. They moved over to the new system as soon as they started advertising the '08 models. The 2007 Prius was advertised (with the 60mpg claim) well into the 2008 model year, at least that was true in the DC area.

I used the 20mpg figure. That was my mistake.

Fine. Then no Prius ever achieved 60mpg.

True, the average is not 60mpg. The average for the H2 an H3 is pretty bad no matter how you cut it.

    20mpg highway is still weak.

Combined I never got better than 16mpg in my '01 GMC ext.cab Z71 and no more than 17mp in my Chevy 4.3L std.cab 2wd. The weight of the H2 would prevent it from getting much better than my 5300lb Z71 and should come nowhere near the MPG on my 4400lb Chevy. Gain, averages for the typical consumer are what matter, not extreme cases.

Have you watched the video of the 300C (or Mangum) test on the EPA website? The show two identical cars being driven in two different manners. The economically driven car got 24mpg on the freeway where theguys driving fast and passing all the time got 17mpg. How do you think the majority of drivers owning trucks and SUVs drive, especially the Hummer crowd?

Yeah 60mpg was a breeze the best ever achieved on a tank was 76.2mpg verified when I filled the tank. The average speed was 58mph.

    Wrong.

60 mpg lifetime average is pretty hard to achieve for most (including myself, I'm nowhere close), but these 4 guys achieved 110 mpg while traveling 1397 miles on one tank. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05220/550484.stm

Afraid that I would agree that the Hummer is more enviromentally friendly. It would generate nearly zero pollution in my driveway as I could not afford to buy enough gas to drive it. It would make a nice toy for the kids to play in tho'...

I used to have a 2000 GMC Sierra and my average was 1 MPG lower than your '01 Z71.

Around 10 km from my hobby farm, a logging operation has started and will probably continue for a year or so. The 4.5 gravel sideroad to my hobby farm was in rough shape to begin with, now it's really awful. Last winter, I managed to get my Prius stuck 3 times, so I went ahead and got a FJ Cruiser as a second vehicle

I'm not driving the FJ very much, currently it has almost 6,000km on it. Going the speed limit, I'm now getting 27 MPG (Imperial Gallon) highway. Not great, but it handles the washouts and deep ruts near the hobby farm no problem.

I messed up and put 4.3L for my other truck. It was actually the 4.8L.

The Prius definately is not a "do-it-all" vehicle so it's understandable some people will require a more trucklike option. :)

Did your rear axle pinion seal spring a leak a couple of weeks into ownership? Mine did, less than 1,000 km on it. I had a sinking feeling right there I had bought a POS lemon, and was I right

The only way the H3 can be more friendly is to compare them to the original Hummer, which I think I read was discontinued due to lack of interest.

I bought the 4.8L truck used with 90k on the clock and they had to do a ton of repairs to the front suspension and some other parts before I could drive it home. Other than that I had no trouble with it for the next 10k miles. I owned the 01' GMC since new and after 98k miles I never had a problem that I didn't cause by modifying it. lol
