Is there a fix or preventative measure for fixing the head gasket issue?

Does replacing the entire engine a solution to the head gasket issue?

head gasket issue plague the 3rd generation 2010-2015 cars. Replacing the entire engine will be a good solution, as long as the replacement engine doesn't have this problem

It would cost you more to put in a replacement engine than it would to repair faulty gasket if it were to fail.. Not all prius motors fail... Mine failed at 350,000 miles but only cot £1000 to have repaired properly... Secret here is if it does fail DON'T PUT HEAD SEALER In it will just make repair more expensive.

Clean the complete EGR system every 50k miles.

Has someone determined how the EGR makes the head gasket blow?

Maybe more succinctly, do you mean "does an EGR system clogged with carbon cause head gasket to fail?". All I can is, based on what I've read here, I think it does, and both to preserve the engine on our '10 and to test the connection, I'll follow the 50K cleaning interval.

Yes, the posts I have read seem to indicate that this is a foregone conclusion, and I understand that the Corolla motors don't really blow the HGs very much. I just don't understand how clogged EGR could cause head gaskets to blow.

And so how will you proceed with yours, eschew the cleaning?

Yes, EGR cleaning is vital...lots of info on this in here. Also, changing the oil and coolant regularly also helps prolong the life of the head gasket. (My oil gets changed every 5,000 miles, or 6-months, and the coolant, both radiator and traction, every 5-years or 50,000 miles.) We have three Toyota's that are 2008's and none have lost a head gasket, thank Goodness.)

when there’s no vacuum to be had from the valve side, the intake will suck harder from PCV side which means more oil straight into that intake and the head. It’s a very strong cause for the gasket failure among a few internal oversights on build quality from the factory. I’d say a dying or dead water pump is MORE of a culprit but…
