Heads up: looks like safety-recalled brake accumulators on eBay

Thanks to another thread, I happened to look at some used brake accumulators being offered on eBay, and wanted to pass along what I saw.

First, a couple bits of copy/paste from the T-CP-D0H-A510-D safety recall instructions:

Now, a little peek at the ones showing up as "used, good condition" on eBay, some for over $400:

Seems like somebody might not be making sure the "(original parts) removed from the vehicle are disposed of in a manner in which they will not be reused".

I would kind of like to think there would be a way to notify eBay about the sellers involved, but I'm not sure if there's a good way to do that. Anybody know?

Barring a way through EBay: Ralph Nader?

Toyota would be interested too I think.

So far, the only experiences I've had using eBay's official "issue with a seller" channels have gone along these lines:

    • Did you buy the thing? Ok, we'll make sure you personally get a refund, but we don't care whether the seller is consistently selling QA-reject merch and just treating the occasional customer refund as a cost of doing business.
    • Did you not buy the thing? Ok, so why are you contacting us exactly?

If I were to contact them on this issue, it would fall right into that second bin.

Probably the only effective method is if somebody has contact info for an actual person there who would understand the question.

This is terrible. Are these units pull from wrecked cars. When I got mine done, the dealer won't give me the parts since they need to go back to Toyota for FA/destroy/etc.

Am I the only one thinking: all those sellers need to do (if possible) is peel the labels off and turn them 90 degrees?

(A little Saturday night levity, sorry.)

Or, giving the sellers the benefit of the doubt, those parts may have come from scrapped vehicles and the sellers may not be aware the parts were subject to recall.

Yes, your evaluation of the situation is reasonable and the issue is sufficiently subtle so that eBay would not care. Used parts are typically guaranteed to work upon installation. There is no guarantee regarding whether or not the parts were superceded by a newer design, it is the buyer's problem to figure that out. At least your OP alerts PC members to the issue.

My brakes were applied as hard as they could last Thurs at sunset (11/16/17). I drive a Prius '06 (second owner) and the brakes DIDN'T work. I know my foot was on the peddle because the guy who helped me told me 'Take your foot off the brake, it is over now and you will be OK'. In hospital for 6 hours and a totaled car. I hit the car in front of me, it was terrifying. Has anyone ever had this happen?

WOW! What a first post on PC. Glad you're OK. And welcome. I don't remember ever hearing of that happening to a Prius without some sort of warning light on the dash ahead of time. Sounds like a brake line broke.

The 06 has anti-lock brakes, should have activated. Did you hear a sort of staccato banging? That would be the anti-lock pulsing the brakes, for Max efficiency.

I'm very sorry to hear about your accident, and glad you are recovering. I think it might be very interesting to discuss what might have happened with your brakes, but might you be able to start a new thread for that? This one is about the possibility of finding used parts for sale that you won't want to buy.

Is this the correct one to get for my 2010 Prius with C1391 code?

Do I also need an acuator?

^ There's something about the orientation of the yellow label. One orientation is old, pre-recall, the other orientation (label turned 90 degrees) is the fixed. I'm not sure but have a hunch that one is pre-recall. @ChapmanF please comment?

Um, you know, this is the thread I started with that information? Look at the pictures in post #1. :)

The one socc705's looking at looks like a good one. (Or, anyway, one that wasn't subject to the D0H recall; whether that used one is good or not is anyone's guess.)
