Hello, I'm shopping for a 3G-question about tonneau/cargo cover

Hello and thanks for having me.

I'm shopping for used/certified 2013-2014 Prius Two vehicles. None of the ones I see for sale have the cargo/tonneau cover. (Window shade-looking thing that can cover the cargo area or be retracted.)

My question is: is it supposed to be there? I can't find it in the Genuine Toyota Accessories website, so I kind of thought it was standard on all Prius. But why do all the used Prii have them missing?

It looks like a new one is $300+ from Toyota. Used ones are around $100 on eBay. Am I wrong in thinking a Certified Used Toyota should come with all standard equipment, and maybe I can use this as a bargaining tool with dealers?

    Thanks in advance.

You might want to look under the cargo floor hatch The next time. That's where they can be stowed. They could have been there without you knowing.

It was included on my used Prius, and others at the same dealer. Maybe they have it in the under-floor stowed position, as BZzap says?

    THIS^^

I have to think the majority of them are kept with the vehicle.

If the vehicle you eventually think you might get REALLY doesn't have it?
I'd definitely recommend going with used option.

I love having mine, but from a pure materials involved and quality standpoint there is no way I think it's worth $300 or more.

It is an "option", depending on the equipment trim the car came with. You -can- buy it as an accessory.
As stated above, it is stowed under the hatch floor. Lift the hatch floor to see if it's there. If not, the dealer may "throw it in" to close the deal. Never hurts to ask.

In the US I believe the only trim level without the cover is a One.

Right. Ones were fleet-only, not sold retail.

I'm pretty sure I have one here somewhere. Let me see if I can find, I'll make you a great deal just to get it out of the way.

It comes standard in Prius II-V (or Prius Two-Five). If they're missing, it's either the dealer is keeping it for themselves to resell as used or the owners kept them and trying to resell them on ebay.

Wish Toyota hadn't made it standard. It sits in the rear floor area taking up valuable space but I have to keep it there because the next owner will want it and if I leave it in the garage it will spirit away on its own. Useless piece of junk, I mean doesn't it tell the world I may have something valuable underneath? Thieves can go ahead and look at the nothing in my trunk.

I think it came standard on two and above. Prius one may have been stripped alone with cruise and alloy rims.

My reason for making sure a Prius I buy has one has nothing to do with hiding cargo.

I have read some anecdotal reports that deploying the shade *may* help keep the battery pack cooler when parked in the sun.

yes, that would qualify.:) i'm just not sure the cargo cover keeps the heat out like a window reflector. in some ways, i would think the heat might build up underneath it.

Once the car gets heat soaked the cargo cover isn't going to do much of anything to reduce the interior temperature. The best thing you can do is to eliminate some of the heat by filtering and reflecting the sun. The most effective way I have found is by tinting the glass, especially the back hatch window. I have tinted mine in graduated shades from front to rear with the rear 1/4 window and back light (window) in very dark limo tint. This has done an outstanding job to reduce interior temperatures. Additionally, I used the very best tint available. The UV ratings are the highest available. The product is "Marathon".
