So yesterday I got these warning lights on my 2007 (tire pressure light is always on because sensor is broken). My mechanic pulled codes P3000 and P0A80. I had my entire hybrid battery replaced about 10 months with a one year warranty on parts only. Looking for advice before I call the shop who replaced the hybrid battery. So. Frustrated. What could this be??

Your refurbished traction battery is shot. You need another one

Is a refurbished traction battery the same thing as the hybrid battery that I had replaced 10 months ago? Sorry, probably stupid question.

Yes. Basically the battery you bought 10 months ago was made up of a bunch of old batteries cobbled together to make the pack work. The good news is it’s still under warranty. The bad news is you have to pay for labor. The worse news is the replacement probably won’t last very long either.
Here is kind of how it works. Yours was most likely done slightly differently.

Yes, these cheaper batteries are simply rebuilt from used but still working modules (cells) and/or other electronics. If you traded the original battery in (or worse gave it to them), they took the remaining good modules and used them along with others to build another refurbished pack. Rinse, lather, repeat. One fellow who posted here has been through SIX dorman brand rebuilt batteries.

So what's my best course of action if I want to get another 7-10 years out of this car?? I've invested a lot of money into it. It's 12 years old, but only has 117k miles. Just spent $2200 on this "new" battery, as well as new water pump, new front brakes, new blower motor for A/C.....

If you are DIY you can get a kit of new cells for $1600 delivered. When installed using your old battery casing, it basically gives you a NEW battery pack. A trustworthy user here, @2k1Toaster is selling them through the website linked in my signature.

I thought I did, but on the paper work it says "rebuild". It was a local hybrid specialty shop. I know it's still under warranty, but now I'm worried to go back and have them replace it with something else that's going to fail in a year.

How much will the labor be to replace it? At least that will give you some time to explore other options. Where are you located? Someone here might know of a reputable repair shop near you.

That was pricey for a rebuilt battery. I'm lucky that my 800$ rebuild is almost 3 years old and still functional.

Okay, I just called. Labor will be around $380. He said it was a "factory rebuild" because Toyota doesn't make "new" batteries. Said it was the best of the best. Asked him if this was normal to have to replace it again within 10 months and he said it depends how you drive. Ugh. Are we just SOL if we have a Gen 2 that needs a new battery?? Is it just a crap shoot?

    liar, liar liar!

unfortunately, you're kinda stuck since it's under warranty, but toyota does make new batteries (you can call a dealer and ask) or you can replace with new aftermarket cells.

    rebuilds are a crapshoot

Is it safe to drive it 25 miles to the shop if I'm getting P3000 and P0A80 codes??

    So you’re in Nor Cal:).

I’ve wanted to try the 2k1toaster kit. If willing to purchase, I’m sure some of us on here (@The Critic and @SFO ) May be willing to assist in the effort ;).

But I won’t put words into their mouth:whistle:.

But the only way to get reliable years is to buy new(y).

Toyota does not make factory rebuilds. Many years ago they tried selling some rebuilds from dealers until they realized those were not dependable. Yours may be from that same failed rebuilder.
