    Hello,

I want to update my son’s gen 3 Prius 2010 radio (51883) to a 2012 base radio (57031). The old radio broke and I found a 57031 unit at a local junk yard for only $65. Not interested in spending $$$ on a fancy aftermarket unit that will get stolen. Please do not recommend cheap units that ship from over seas. I prefer a factory radio that I can source from Ebay if stolen within a week.

I thoroughly searched other threads but they had me confused because they were installing fancier units.

To be clear, these are the units I mentioned. These are the fronts,

    and these are the backs,

Other threads mentioned adapter cables that can be ordered from Toyota, but I was not sure if my installation required the same models. I am showing both cable parts below,

And finally, one thread mentioned a wire hack needed for the antena and uploaded this diagram,

Those are all the facts I gathered. I trust myself that I can follow instructions if someone shares basic guidance for this installation. I have removed the head unit before just to explore the cable connections from the back of the radio. I only probably need the right cable adapters to make this work.

I know this quest for help is probably obsolete in today’s standard, but this is purely driven by money, safety, and just because I am probably too cheap.

Thanks in advance and hope not to receive too many critics of this obsolete upgrade.

So, after reading several threads I ordered the necessary cables to make the steering wheel buttons work. Everything seems okay, steering buttons work, except the volume.

I cannot get sound from my new unit. Any ideas? Please remember this is a Gen 3 Prius and not a Prius V like my avatar.

I unplugged the beige antenna amplifier wire mentioned in another thread and still get no sound. Not sure what is going on.

I had to return the unit. I could not make the music play. Pin 8 to antenna cable only produced a loud buzzing sound. After trying multiple times my dashboard displayed the triangle of death (orange triangle) and it scared the s*ht out of me. I also had an extreme hard time making pin 8 cable go back in the connector. I was very close to breaking the cable because once it bends, it would not go back to its original position. .

i also tried several YouTube video recommendations for wiring and could not make the sound work.

Final recommendation: don’t do it if you are an amateur.

I am grateful for everything I learned. And I’ve final request to Toyota, please make your cars more standardized for these connectors. This was ridiculously hard.

Why assume that the wiring harness for an older model will suit a newer model that has more features and blame the manufacturer when it doesn't?

I never assumed anything. I knew it was different before starting this project.
