PRIUSCHAT.COM A New, Comprehensive Revision of an Original Post from 2017 "How To Convert From HID To Halogen" IMPORTANT: These instructions and drawing are to enable you to use the existing HID headlight wiring and adapt it to a replacement halogen or LED headlight assembly. Please note that extensive research on this conversion has revealed the following facts: 1. A relay, or relay's, MUST be used! Attempting to eliminate a relay will create one of the following failed conditions- A. A NO-toggle of high and low beam. Headlights will be stuck on high beam or low beam, or both high and low, depending on how the wiring is done. B. In the case of both high and low being on, this will cause premature failure of the bulb, excessive heat which can melt the assembly housing and lenses, and blind oncoming drivers! REQUIRED COMPONENTS: Halogen headlight assembly's Relay RL45 5 prong, 40 AMP max, 12V, 480 watts Can be purchased at AutoZone and O'Reilly, Ebay, Amazon, etc Two, quantity, one for drivers side, one for passenger side Pigtail/headlight socket/wiring harness plug/female connector used: Brand, VARGTR (Amazon), ceramic H4 9003 HB2 wiring harness socket Two, quantity Disconnects (if not soldering the wires/connects): 22-16 or 22-18 gauge spade pins, male and female 1/4" fully insulated disconnects are preferred, however, standard/non-insulated are fine as long as heat/shrink tube is used over the connections to insulate the bare connects A minimum quantity of 16 pairs CONVERSION INSTRUCTIONS Only two of the power sources coming from the fuse panel and going to the factory/existing HID headlight assembly will be used on the new halogen/LED headlight assemblies. Both of these sources are 2-wire only(!): 1. Power source #1 goes to the HID housing plug located on the round access dome that seals the back of the housing on the original equipment assemblies. A. Cut the two wires going to this plug. B. Standard colors are- driver's side is red (positive) and white with black stripe (negative). Passenger side is blue (pos) and white with black stripe (neg) These can vary depending on model and year. a. HOW TO WIRE/CONNECT TO THE NEW HALOGEN/LED ASSEMBLY: for both drivers and passengers' side, connect the positive wire to relay spade 30. Connect negative to the black wire (ground/neg) on the pigtail plug/connector (that goes to the new halogen/LED light/lamp). As a visual, if holding the 3-prong plug with the pigtails pointed toward you, the single horizontal spade being at the top and the two vertical spades on the right and left, the negative will connect to the bottom left lead. 2. Power source #2. Other than the marker lamp and turn signal lamp, which go back into their normal locations on the new headlight assembly, there is only one more 2-wire plug on the old HID assemblies. It is a gray 1-1/2" diameter round plug below and to the left (drivers' side) or below and to the right (passenger side). If you follow these leads inside the housing you will see that they connect to the square deflector motor located directly below the HID headlamp. A. Cut these the two wires going to the gray plug. B. Typical color code is, drivers' side, red (pos) and white with black stripe (neg). Passenger side is normally purple (pos), white/black stripe (neg). a. HOW TO WIRE/CONNECT TO THE NEW HALOGEN/LED ASSEMBLY: for both driver's and passenger's side, connect the positive to relay spade 85. Connect negative to relay spade 86. 3. Additional leads are required to complete the circuits. A. Using the wire from inside the old HID housing, cut two lengths of red leads. B. Attach female disconnects to the end of each lead. a. HOW TO WIRE/CONNECT TO THE NEW HALOGEN/LED ASSEMBLY: connect one lead from relay spade 87 (high beam) to the blue pigtail plug/connector going to the headlamp. Connect the other lead from relay 87a (low beam) to the top/red horizontal pigtail plug/connector going to the headlamp.
