How do I check for CEL codes?

    What is the procedure to check the codes when the check engine light illuminates. I am looking for the exact procedure. For example in my other cars, you connect the scanner to the OBD2 connector, then you turn the key to ON without starting the car.

    What is done on a 2008 prius - there is no key to turn to ON?

    The Prius equivalent is to start from IG-OFF, then press the POWER button twice, without depressing the brake pedal. The car will move from IG-OFF to ACC-ON, to IG-ON which is what you want.

    When you are done, press the POWER button once more to make the car IG-OFF. Don't leave the car IG-ON for a prolonged length of time because that places a heavy current drain on the 12V battery.
