This is absurd, is this for real?
The manual says that keeping the Smart Key within 3ft. of a phone, lamp, or any electronics will seriously deteriorate the battery.

I have tried, but cannot find any convenient place in my small house that I can place it. My friends with electronic keys say they've never done this, and their batteries have lasted several years so far.

    Any input will be appreciated,

I love my new Prius, and I love Prius Chat:cheer2:

Obviously keep the remote away from such items if at all possible but maybe take 3ft with a pinch of salt. I think they're just being overly cautious.

I just use my keys as normal and the battery is still good in my remote. Being a taxi, my doors are opened and closed many many times a day and the car is locked and unlocked with the keys many times a day when I leave the vehicle.

We bought in December. Noted the issue. Couldn't "solve" it. Ignored it. No problems.

Usually have 2-3 fobs in pocket at once. Will set the Prius fob a few inches separate at night. Otherwise, have ignored it.

See P64 of the owners manual to see what June read. That was news to me and potentially useful information.

You could make a small tinfoil hat for your smart key:D

More seriously, just don't store it on top of or right beside the mentioned devices. It sounds like they are being overly cautious.

Just exercise a little bit of care and see what happens, all you have to lose is a smart key battery and that most likely won't happen. The battery is a CR1632 lithium battery, about $3.00.

Read the part in the manual where it tells you how to start your car with a dead smart key battery, everyone should know that anyway.

This is just typical overly cautious "cover your butt" verbiage. Try to keep your key fobs away from transmitters, such as cell phones. They can wear down the fob battery.

I keep my fob in one pocket and my cell phone in the other.

I do nothing special in this regard. Fob in my pocket, cell phone in holster.

At home, put both on counter, next to each other. 1+ years later no issue.

the difference between this and your other car fobs is this one is 'active' working with the sks, not just a button you push on it to unlock the door.:)

We have had our Prius for about three and a half years. I carry the fob in my right pocket and my cell phone in a holster on my belt on the left side. Still on the original battery. No problems.

My other car's fob is keyless too. I got a 4.5 year battery life with no consideration about where I carried or stored the fob.

There is probably some set of circumstances where Toyota's caution makes sense, but at about $3.00 for a fob battery, I'll wait until I personally verify a problem before trying very hard to follow Toyota's cautions.

I keep my phone in my left pocket and my key in my back right. Not sure how I'm suppose to keep the key 3ft away from electronics at all times considering I always have my laptop, phone, or am near a computer lol

I've been married for 35 years. It's too late for any additional damage. ;)

It's not the width of the hips, but the size of the equipment that blocks the signal. :p

Don't worry about it AT ALL. My cell phone lives in the console tray in the summer, fob in my right front pocket. That is about 5". In the winter the fob is in the left inside pocket of my coat and the cell phone in the left outside pocket. About 1/4" apart. First fob battery lasted 4 years.

That's pretty discouraging to me. My smart key works no matter what pocket I put it in.:(
