    Just for fun:

How old were you when you got your first car, or other road legal vehicle?

Did you buy it or was it given to you.

Pictures would be a great visualization aid.

    I'll go first:

    I bought my first vehicle, a Honda S-90 at 16, ~$400:

I bought my first four wheel vehicle, a '40 Ford Panel Truck at 17, $800:

I needed the truck to take the Cycle to Pete's Cycle, then in Cockeysville,
MD, for it's 1000 mi services. In ways I can no longer remember, never
mind comprehend, I was able to run up 1000 miles weekly despite an
AM job before school and on weekends, high school, and sports team
practices/games after school. (Mine was the color of the fenders in the
    picture above.)

I bought my first "real car," a dealer demo Gen I BMW 2002, at 21, ~$3K:

No pics but my first set-o-wheels was a 1987 Honda Elite 50cc Scooter - I was 16, Dad bought it new for me $600.

My first set of four wheels was a used 1991 Miata in 1993 - I was 21 - bought it myself. $10,500; 60k miles. <- Perhaps I can scan in my Polaroid. !!

Bought my first car when I was 20. A nineteen seventy something VW Beetle (because that's all I could afford at the time).

My first car was a black, 1937 Ford, 2 door sedan. The family made it available when they bought a used 1941 Ford. My second car was the 1941.

The first car I purchased was a bright red, 1962 VW bug. Paid $1800. I was newly married, and 25 years old. I drove it for years, and put 150,000 miles on it.

My first car was a faded green 1960 Chevrolet bought in 1971 from a friend at work. Six cylinder with straight shift on the column. I had just completed 2 years at a junior college and was working construction before finally going back to school 5 years later.

My first vehicle: a tricycle. I was only 4 and I don't remember much about it.

    Oh, sorry. :p

My first motor vehicle: I moved in with my wife so I shared her 2000 Sable wagon. (I used public transportation before I moved here).
    First purchase: 2008 Civic.
    (Next purchase was the Prius).

That's me done until at least 2018, I hope.

Adopted an old family beater at age 14 (yes, I had a valid drivers license). Was given a reliable used car at 18, going to college, after that beater went to car heaven. Bought the car I wanted at 24.

My first vehicle was a 1987 GMC Jimmy I purchased when I was 15. The rear main seal was leaking so the first thing we did was pull the engine and rebuild it. By that time I had been helping him fix cars for about 3 years.

My first motorcycle was a 1982 Kawasaki KZ440 I purchased without permission when I was 17. When my father took it for a spin and came back with a smile I knew I would be keeping it.

I got my license the day I turned 14. It was legal if you lived on a farm and we did. I drove farm trucks for a while until I purchased a 1977 Ford Pinto Van (technically called the Pinto Cruising Wagon). I drove that car until almost the end of my senior year when I moved up to a 1978 Ford Mustang II King Cobra.

The Pinto still sits on my aunt's farm. I saw it a couple years ago. It's pretty rusty now, a few bullet holes and the glass is gone. The pic isn't mine just one like it.

1963 VW Beetle from my sister when I was 15 1/2 and it sat in the backyard until I was 16. I will admit that it did get back up and moved forward more than once during that 6 months.;)

    I had a restricted license at 14 for my Honda 90 Scrambler.:D

    1. My parent's 7-year-old 1981 Mazda GLC for my second year of college, then I upgraded ? to

    2. a 1977 Chevy Malibu with 3-on-the-tree, and it would occasionally get stuck going from first to second. I carried a big screwdriver for this type of occasion and would pop the trunk and wiggle the linkage back into neutral. A bit of a pain when driving the steep hills of Duluth MN.

    3. First car I actually bought was a 1965 VW bug from my sister for $500. Interesting that my cars kept getting older...but my next car was a 1987 Nissan Sentra E (in 1992). I had moved to Texas, and for the first time in my life, had a car with A/C. After driving the bug, it was practically silent, but I still preferred the bug. But the Nissan got 40 mpg on the highway (69 HP, no power steering, no power brakes, no power windows, no power locks, no passenger-side rear-view mirror).

The first car I ever bought with money that I earned was a 1971 Dodge Dart when I was 18.

It was white with a black vinyl top. It had black vinyl seats and the A/C didn't work. It was only five years old when I bought it and had about 50,000 miles on it. I think I paid $1200 for it and traded it in for $500 when a bought a brand new 1979 Chevette in December 1978 for $4000.

I drove that Dart past Graceland the day Elvis died. I was driving back to the Navy base in Millington when his death was announced on the radio.

I bought a Honda 305 Superhawk at 16, 2 months later I was taken out by a guy making a left turn with no directional signal. At 17 I bought a brand new '67 GTO. I was a farm kid and my parents only let me spend .20c on the dollar the rest in savings. Paid for the Goat in cash saved since 8 y.o. I think it was about 3400.00, and I miss it.

    When I was 16 I got a 1966 Mustang.

    When I was 21 I bought a 1987 Porsche 924S.

Prius was my first new car in 2010. Now I have 2 new cars because I was sick of hemorrhaging money into used cars.

    16yo. VW bug, 1966 think.
    19yo, Honda 350 cycle NEW
First new vehicle 1983 Isuzu truck
First new car Prius 2003 (2004 model)

I bought them all (and many others) with my own money. I've worked since 9 yo, earlier if you count babysitting. Since high school I've been totally self-supporting except college years when I paid everything except books and tuition. I yam what I yam all by myself, learned early in life you can't rely on anyone except yourself. The few minor gifts are gravy, no lawsuit winnings or inheritances, and certainly no help from family.

I had use of my parent's cars for awhile, but they wanted to use it as a control device by insisting it be home by a certain time. So, I'd get a friend to follow me home, drop the car off by the midnight curfew, and head out again. The car's home! Bye! Oh, my poor parents. :p

Dad gave me the old beater station wagon - a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere - as a graduation present. It needed more work than I had the patience and pocketbook for, so it only lasted a few years longer. It had a good long life as the family car, but I got it near the end and wasn't able to give it the hospice care it needed.

Especially when I bought a motorcycle the next summer. I had so many tickets....but it was great fun. I even went camping on it, packing the barest essentials into a tank bag and strapping a sleeping bag to the seat behind me.

After university I had to get a real job, and ended up with a cute little Mitsubishi Arrow. So, that was the first car I bought, at about 23.
