BretSS how great work and writeup! Thanks a lot.

Since I only care about adding the mod to the hatch door how can the procedure simplified?
My european Prius currenty has keyless entry to the drivers door (LHD) and when you grab the handle unlocks all doors.

Finally decided to do the hatch door. Understanding the connections required thanks to BretSS's huge help, I only have 1 question.

Has anyone done just the door or just the hatch and if so, did he connect the second antenna in parallel or serial? Any isuues with his mod?

Thanks a lot for any input.

i'm probably very late to the game...
    for reference:
antenna female part on the antenna was 90980-12382 - this on the antenna itself.
antenna male connector part number: 90980-12381

pin with pigtail part number is 82998-24360.

I added an SKS door handle to the passenger door on my Gen IV Prius based on the write-up that BrettS prepared. It cost me $70 using a handle from a salvage yard. The attached file shows how I did it.

If BrettS or pEEf are still checking this thread, I would appreciate any advice you could offer on the hatch switch. I did verify the wiring for the Gen IV hatch is the same as Gen III. One wire is routed to the Main Body ECU (BDSU) and I found the second wire (TSW6) from the hatch switch. However, for the Gen IV, I only see Ant 1 and Ant 2 at the door handle / Certification ECU (see attached file for Gen IV schematic from TIS). There are no “lock” and “unlock” sensor wires so I am not sure how to wire the hatch switch. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey, so this was kind of a blast from the past for me. I can’t believe I created this write up more than 11 years ago now. I no longer have my Prius, but hopefully the passenger door and hatch SKS are still working well for it’s current owner:)

In any case, I took a little while to look over my write up and try to figure out exactly what I did 11 years ago to see what help I can provide for you.

So the end goal here is to tell the car to lock or unlock the doors when you press the buttons on the hatch switch. With my car the front handles had discrete lock and unlock signals. One wire was used to lock the doors when you touched the right spot on the handle and the other wire was used to unlock the doors when you touched that spot on the handle. So that made it easy to tie the hatch switch in… I just connected the unlock button on the hatch switch to the same wire that was used by the door handle to send the unlock signal and the same for the lock button.

But in your case it sounds like your door handles are completely different with only two wires and I’m not totally sure what to make of that. My first thought was that there was some sort of intelligence in the door handle and it was connecting to the CAN bus to send the lock and unlock signals that way, but the more I look at it, the less I think that is what is happening. Even if it was communicating on the CAN bus I feel like it would need more than just two wires… at a minimum it would also need power, but beyond that there is an antenna in the door handle, and unless there is also a whole radio built in to receive the signal and encode that on the CAN bus as well (which I doubt) then there should be wires for the antenna as well. Given that the two wires that you have identified are labeled ANT 1 and ANT 2, I would assume that those are for the antenna and the lock and unlock signals are sent… some other way. Are there really only those two wires going to your door handles or are there other wires somewhere?

You also don’t necessarily need to connect the lock and unlock buttons for the hatch to the same connections as the door handles, if you can find another way to tie them in. Initially I was thinking that you might just be able to use the connections for the door lock/unlock button on the interior of the door, but then it occurred to me that those work all the time, whether the car is locked or unlocked and whether the keyfob is near the car or not, so I don’t think that will work for you.

I think your best bet is to try to figure out how the car gets the lock and unlock signals from the door handles. I can’t imagine that is being communicated on the ANT 1 and ANT 2 wires, so I feel like there must be some other wires somewhere… but I don’t know where.

I’m not sure if that was helpful or not, but hopefully you can get it working. Let me now how you make out:)

Greatly appreciate the reply Brett. Over 11 years ago and people (like me) are still using your write-up! That says a lot.

I can confirm there are only two wires at the handle. This is also consistent with the schematic from TIS (see attachment). The good news is, just following the schematic wiring (and your write-up) did allow me to add the passenger side SKS handle and it works great. I don't even see a range difference with the driver's door.

I bought a second handle from a salvage yard (wrong color) so I could explore what might be going on inside the handle. I am attaching a photo of what I found inside it. It may be hard to see but there is a small PCB encased in orange plastic (for weather protection I expect) and what appears to be an antenna. There are no other wires anywhere near or in the handle. I was wondering if the handle might sense a capacitance change when the human body touches it. But, this is just a guess.

Not sure I will find a solution to where the lock/unloock function occurs. But, if not, I learned a few things and was able to add an SKS entry point on the passenger side.

If you have any other ideas or thoughts, they would be appreciated.

That’s really odd. You can clearly see the antenna in the handle, but I have no idea how it detects or transmits the lock and unlock signals. On my Gen III Prius I believe it was a capacitive sensor as well, but there were two sensors and two places to touch on the handle. If you touched the back of the handle, like you would to open the door, it would unlock the car, then if you touched the side of the handle it would lock the car. Does it work the same way on the Gen IV car?

Either way, I still have no idea how it transmits the fact that you touched the handle to the computer with just those two wires… perhaps your hand affects the signal it’s getting from the antenna and the computer can detect that.

As far as another way to move forward, I’m not sure I have a lot of ideas. Like I said, you need to find some sort of separate lock and unlock wire that you can tie the hatch buttons into, but I can’t really think of where you might find any. The only thing I can think of is the door lock/unlock button on the inside of the door, but since that will work whether the car is locked or unlocked then it won’t work for this or anyone would be able to lock or unlock your car from the hatch whether they had the keyfob or not.

Here are a couple of really wild ideas… you could try to put an oscilloscope on those antenna wires and see if you can see any indication of how it is transmitting the lock and unlock signal and then try to come up with a circuit to duplicate that for the hatch buttons, but doing something like that is way over my head.

Alternately, maybe you could find a way to modify your extra door handle so you could mount it in the hatch area. That way you could connect it the same way you connected the other door handle and then touch that door handle at the hatch to lock or unlock the car.

Again, thanks for your kind assistance. The Gen IV handle does work like you describe on the Gen III. Touch the inside of the handle to unlock. Touch a spot on the outside toward the front of the handle to lock.

You have given me some ideas to think about. I will update you (and others) if I make any progress on figuring out the hatch switch.

So as I’m looking at your picture I’m thinking this plate I’ve circled in red is the touch sensor for lock at the outside front of the handle.

    608A6B04-3BA3-4747-9BEE-CD6AA1B6674C.jpeg

It looks like it connects to the silver pad on the other side of the handle when they are put together. I’m thinking there’s probably a similar plate on the other side of the circuit board for the unlock sensor. I’m thinking that if you took the circuit board and antenna out then you might be able to get two plates next to each other to replicate lock and unlock ‘buttons’ for the hatch.

Thanks Brett, I appreciate the additional ideas. I am out of town right now but will investigate further when I return home.

Member Bowcoastie had posted that their 2010 Gen II did not have a Lite Green wire under the headliner. Does anyone know what color those with a Gen II can look for and tap into? Not knowing which wire it is has led me to stop with the rest of the mod. I was able to confirm that the wire colors near the passenger floor boot and behind the glove box appeared to still match the Gen III. Provided is Bowcoastie's photo of the Gen II connector, from under the headliner.

For anyone wanting to add SKS function to passenger door and rear hatch, I offer the following solution for review and comment:

    1. Buy passenger door handle/antenna assy from a model IV or V Prius cheap from auto recycler/ebay: $cheap
    2. Replace rear hatch button with one from a model IV or V Prius from auto recycler/ebay: $cheap
    3. Buy rear antenna cheap from auto recycler/ebay (toyota part#: 89997-30070): $cheap
    4. Buy SKS certification ecu from a model IV or V Prius cheap from auto recycler/ebay: $30 (include harness connector/wires as you will need the female pins from this donor connector)
    5. Install the rear antenna according to BrettS instructions, but add the female pins for the rear antenna to the SKS certification ecu harness for direct connection to ecu
    6. Install the passenger door handle assy according to BrettS instructions, but add the female pins to the SKS certification ecu harness for direct connection to ecu
    7. Buy virgin key fob(s) boards from china/Aliexpress: $40ea
    8. If don't have already, get TechStream running on a laptop (refer to many threads on this subject)
    9. Program the keys to the SKS certification ecu using Techstream

    Anyone tried this?

Ok, looking through this and was wanting to do this to my 2012 prius v, I pulled the door card and I have a blue connector on the door, but it only has one wire coming out of it, what am I miss, and what do I need to add?

Ok I've got everything I need, and in my prius v wagon, I was reading another that followed this write up, but wire colors are different for the v, anyone know which black wire I am supposed to use instead of the light green?
