Boy, a Hummer H1 limo. That sure is neat! I bet it could go over anything and the driver wouldn't even feel it!

East High student dragged under wheels of prom limo

An East High School student who was run over by a stretch limousine leaving the school prom Saturday was in critical condition after surgery Monday.

Molly Bloom, 17, a standout on the school's swim team, sustained injuries to her leg and pelvis when she was dragged under the rear tires of the vehicle, according to police and students.

"Molly is still in stable condition, and her doctors are pleased," said a posting by a family member Monday morning on the high school's website.

Bloom was leaving the prom about 11 p.m. in the 1700 block of Sherman Street, near the Sherman Street Event Complex, and was getting into the Hummer H1 limousine when the driver started to move before she was fully inside, Denver police spokeswoman Virginia Quiñones said.

Bloom was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center, according to school district officials - who confirmed that the girl's condition was critical but stable.

School administrators, who also witnessed the incident, told 7News that her injuries were too gruesome to describe.

The Hummer H1 limo was being operated by 5th Ave N Style Limousine, chief operating officer Richard Perricone confirmed.

It was rented for the evening by a group of East students, Perricone said.

Perricone said the driver, who has worked for the company since February, was placed on leave pending the results of a police investigation.

The driver, Perricone said, has a safe driving record and experience driving large vehicles such as the Hummer limo.

The H1, styled after the Humvee used by the military, has a weight in the non-stretch version of more than 8,100 pounds, according to General Motors Corp.

Perricone declined to talk specifically about the accident but said that the limo has clear rear- mirror views to the back of the vehicle.

He also said that with a vehicle that large, it is likely the driver might not immediately feel anything caught underneath it.

Denver police officers have not completed their investigation, and there was no indication whether charges are pending, Quiñones said.

"We would like to thank our family, friends, the students at East High School and everyone in the community who have come together to support us during this difficult time," the Bloom family said in a prepared statement.

"We have had numerous offers from people wishing to help," the family said. "We ask that you donate blood to Bonfils Blood Center."

East students and parents were sent a letter Monday from principal Kathy Callum that explained the incident but did not include the student's name.

"Everything is being done to ensure a positive recovery, and we anticipate that her recovery may be a long one," Callum's letter said.

A team of counselors and psychologists was at the school Monday to help students cope with the emotional trauma of the situation, Callum said.

"Molly is an exceptional young woman, and I think many people consider Molly to be their best friend because that is the kind of girl she is. And my daughter feels honored to know her," said Janice Havranek, the mother of Katie Havranek - a friend of Molly's since she was 8 years old.

"It will be a tough road back, and we are all just praying for her," Havranek said.

The news is now reporting that the girl had to have her left leg amputated.

You just have to wonder if the "cool" factor of the gigantic run-you-over tires is still appealing to the kids after their friend got run over.

Yeah. Perhaps her friends might never ride in a limo again and perhaps it will be a while before anyone gets one of those for her school's proms in the future. But a couple towns over much less in the next state, they probably don't care. There are probably proms this weekend that will have the exact same model and the students won't think twice about it. Or if they do question their safety, they'll just get in and out a little slower or faster whatever the case may be. Like all news events, this whole thing will blow over in two weeks and the kiddies will get back to being themselves without looking back.
