LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Fuelled by the surge in oil prices, a car revolution is sweeping US freeways with gas-guzzling mega-cars being forced off the road by smaller, cleaner hybrid automobiles.

The only thing forcing a gas guzzler off the road is money, not a hybrid.

Amazing to see a story like this while the whining about whether hybrids are any good is still seething. But it is too tempting for a reporter to be first to claim that a tipping point has been passed, rather than explore the ongoing resistance and denial.

Not sure how lagging sales of the mega-cars equals forcing them off the road, nor is that claim explored in the story.

I'm sure we'll be hearing of very slick salespersons working for The Big Three telling their customers not to buy a Toyota Prius. Those darn things are stalling on the freeway and bursting into flames or some such nonsense.

And your wallet will burst from all the money accumulating there, rather than being spent on gas!

Remember, we've been told that consumption of precious resources is good for our economy.

The NBC Network News has been doing an ongoing thing called "Pain at the Pump" ( at least that's what it should be)... last night they interviewed a couple of people who traded their trucks for hybrids and a Ford dealer who said he'd sold his allotment of hybrid SUVs... he sounded like a Toyota dealer from last year.

Wait till the expected summer-time surge in gas prices and see things heat up even more. (AAA is predicting record summer driving this year.)

gee whiz, rather surprised to hear that my little 2800 lb Prius is forcing those big bad nice person 6000 lb SUV's off the road. i guess when push comes to shove, if one keeps driving those big gas guzzlers, they will soon be pushing

I agree totally. And not only from the salspersons, but also from car reviewers that cater to Detroit.

We need to learn to be appreciative of those who so willingly sacrifice so much to help keep the gas companies in business. Otherwise they might be there for our monthly top off of gas.

I have had to listen to people talk about how the price of gas is going to get so high over the Memorial Day weekend. I told one Yukon driver that I'm going to get gas next Tuesday whether I need it or not just to make sure I won't need gas until well after Memorial Day weekend.

I just love it when they are speechless.

The Yukon driver would be speechless. The hybrid driver would reply, "Yeah, but you won't know whether to post your mileage in the May thread or the June thread if you wait that long." LOL

Next time you fill up in the vicinity of a Hummer or some other Sport Ridiculous Vehicle, have a bottle of Sta-Bil in your hand. Then explain, "ya I like to put this in so the gas dosen't go bad before I need annother fillup". Might be interesting to see thier reaction...
