Going about 50mph, trying to merge onto the highway, when all of a sudden, a loose tire in the road attacked my 2-week old prius. I had no choice but to drive over the thing :-(

    I've attached a few photos of the damage - how much do you guys think I am looking at to fix it? IMG_0327.jpg IMG_0327.jpg IMG_0324.jpg IMG_0325.jpg IMG_0326.jpg IMG_0328.jpg IMG_0329.jpg IMG_0324.jpg IMG_0325.jpg IMG_0326.jpg

You have insurance against road hazards, let them sort it out and get it fixed right the first time!

$500 if you didn't have any internal damages and the front bumper can be polished out. Twice that or more if you have to replace the front bumper. :(

OMG, you hit an ad for Tustin Toyota and it stuck to your front bumper! A screwdriver and a little filler should fix that right up. Can't tell what all else was damaged by tire but it doesn't look like much.

Sucks. After avoiding four boxes that fell off a car, I hit a black box on the freeway in the morning before the sun came up. This was 2 months after I got my car. $2000 to replace bumper, lower grill, plastic wheel well shroud, and 1 turn signal. So you're probably looking at less than $500.

Is that your comprehensive coverage deductible? I believe that's what applies to this and not collision.
If it's the plastic undertray loose and bent up maybe it can be put back in place with some nuts and bolts replacing any of those plastic pushin things. Did this on the Honda van awhile back after a run in(over) with a parking curb.

Get it checked out. The exhaust system might be effected. Radiator mounts. There's many underpanels in the path.

I went over one of those wood pallets once. It was lying sort-of diamond orientation in the lane. There was no way to swerve, so I straddled it. Not quite as high as a tire I think, it was womp-womp, no harm ;)

If memory serves, it works like this: if you hit a moving or stationary object in the roadway, it is considered a collision for insurance purposes. If something flies through the air and hits your car, that is covered by comprehensive insurance. Might be best to ask your insurance agent to be sure, as my Fire and Casualty License was issued in the sixties, and my insurance career lasted only a few months.

That's miserable. I had a similar incident a couple years ago, only much, much worse. When I told my insurance company that I had tried to swerve to avoid hitting the object (limited by rush hour traffic), it became "not my fault," and I didn't even have to pay the deductible. Good luck.

So I got the repair bill from the insurance company - over $1500!

    -repair bumper
    -replace engine cover
    -replace splash shield
    -replace lower grill
    -repair lower tie bar

Luckily, insurance is covering the damages under my comprehensive policy, which has no deductible.
Should have the car back tomorrow - can't wait to get out of my rental (2012 Mazda 2) and back into my prius!

I was going to suggest a lot more than others have said only because my wife recently had just a bumper cover replaced on her 2012 Camry. Just the cover alone, paint and installation was over $800.

All damages nowadays are double or more than what makes sense.
