I've about gotten used to the now and then rough shutdown of the ICE....but now I've noticed that when I stop at a light the ICE will sometimes run on for a while before shutting down even though the MFD shows it as not operating. Also if I was being powered solely by the electric motor when I stop I have to press down harder than necessary on the brake pedal to cause the display to indicate that the electric motor is not running. No big deal but annoying. Anybody else notice this? Likely just MFD/sensor quirks, I guess.

I've noticed the ICE running and no MFD display myself. I've also had times where the MFD was showing stealth mode (yellow arrows) and 99.9 MPG, but when I came to a stop, the ICE is clearly on. Weird.

Yeah, I've noticed this as well, but I don't consider it a problem. Not yet anyway........

The display doesn't have an ICE running indication.

It has power flow indications, but if the engine is just running to provide cabin heat, or as part of the warm up sequence, then it's not providing motive power, so there's no indication.

This is my understanding as well...the display shows what is propelling the car, not what is "running."

    Also...
It is called "Energy Monitor" not "ICE status Monitor".

A careful read of the Five Stages document may help clear this up.

Not uncommon! This is why many of us who are interested have resorted to a variety of secondary monitoring systems such as the CAN View, ScanGage and others more home brew types to dig in to the details. Sometime the ICE is actually burning gas sometimes it is just spinning to balance out the PSD. Some of this makes a difference in MPG and some of it does not. As noted the energy monitor screen monitors energy flows in general, but not in detail.

So how does the ICE run without consuming energy? :)

It's for driving/regenerating energy only. It is not a bug, but a specification. :)

The ICE only provides energy to the wheels and/or generator when it is actually pushing on them. This usually happens when it is running. But it is possible, for example during warm-up, for the car to spin the PSD components under electrical power so that they offer no resistance to the ICE and therefore it is not supplying power to them. However this should be an unusual occurance, and I think I would generally be limited to the warm-up period. Otherwise, if it's going to burn gas it will use that to do some work, driving the car and/or recharging the battery.
