If the Prius didn't kill the Insight, the Camry will

    For comparison, the 1st Gen Prius got 4.5/4.6 and a HCH-I got 4.9/4.6. The Insight-II gets 4.8/4.5 on the LX and 5.0/4.6 for the EX. The CR-Z is rated at 5.6/5.0 with the CVT and 6.5/5.3 with 6MT.


    Seeing how I was fairly close with the 2010's Prius pricing, I'll take a stab at the 2012 Camry.

    The base 2012 LE comes in at $23,700 (2011: $25,310) and the XLE V6 at $33,700 (2011: $36,410 w/o nav. $38,340 w/ nav)and the current 2011 Camry Hybrid starts at $31,310.

    So I'll guess that the Camry Hybrid LE will start at $28,200 and the Camry Hybrid XLE at $29,990. :D. Let's see if I can work my magic again.

    The new hybrid Camry has gotten terrific reviews, but hasn't Toyota come out and said that they expect the Prius to overtake the Camry as the company's sales leader?

    I think they meant the Prius family. (Note that the Corolla numbers includes the Matrix and the Camry numbers included the Solara when that was still around).

    Yeah, as Jon said, Toyota expects the Prius family to outsell the Camry and Jon expects the Camry to outsell the Insight.

    In other words, the "Prius Killer" will be outsold by a family sedan.

    For the combined EPA fuel economy, both 98hp Insight and 200hp Camry hybrid are rated with the same 41 MPG.

    I see new Insights occasionally and that makes me happy. It has a nice design (outside at least), and the Prius needs a good competitor.

    OK, so it will get the same 42 MPG as the Prius v (midsize wagon).

    It is not up on Honda or EPA site yet. Do you have a source?

    I'm amazed that the head of Honda's hybrid program has not been exiled from Japan and forced to live on the mainland (kind of like how those on mainland are exiled to islands).

    The Honda Insight is not compelling in any way. Neither is the CR-Z, which is a small, slow, two-seater with so-so mileage (awful for a hybrid, though). Compare to a Hyundai Veloster, which is also very small, but does have a second row of seats, better power to weight ratio of the CR-Z and essentially the same mileage. Plus it's cheaper.

    Honda's hybrid program is an unmitigated disaster. We have now Hyundai and Ford both with strong hybrid models and Toyota.

    And now we have a larger, powerful sedan from Toyota the Camry getting essentially the same mileage as the little Insight.

    They probably don't have a choice for better engineers. The good ones are working on either Fuel Cell or the Jet engine that kept getting delayed.

    Reviews of the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid has been very positive so far. The potential mileage above 40mpg in reviews like this got my attention and will probably test drive the Hybrid XLE.
    Does anybody know when it will hit showrooms?

    The Camry V6 runs from 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds,
    The Camry Hybrid runs from 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds, Who needs a V6?
    the Camry I4 does it in 8.6 seconds.

    That's important to highlight. Most people just look for the payback of a hybrid and dismiss the extra power and acceleration benefits.

    Probably not. Toyota will keep their engines in use for around 10 years

    e.g.

    1NZ-FE from ~1998 to 20?? (It's still in use for the Yaris. Does the new Yaris have a brand new 1.5 litre?)
    2AZ-FE from ~2001 to 20?? (it's still in use in the 2011 Corolla XRS, HS250h and Scion xB)
    1MZ-FE from 1993 to 2003 and the 3MZ-FE from 2004 to 2010
    1ZZ-FE from 1998 to 2008
    1UZ-FE from 1990 to 2000

    and so on


    So I would expect Toyota to keep the current 1.8 litre engine but improve on the electric side with a more compact, powerful motor and better batteries.


    I heard Nov/Dec for the Hybrids (The regular ones should be in already)
