My April fools was that silly Toyota floor mat recall on the Prius:

My recall says, " The defect is the potential FOR AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE driver's floor mat to interfere with the accelerator pedal and cause it to get stuck in a the wide open position. Toyota has determined that this defect does not exist in vehicles in which the driver side floor mat is compatible with the vehicle and properly secured."

This basically says there's no problem if your car has OE mats with hooks, as mine does.

So what's the issue? Nothing peculiar to Toyota or the Prius. An unsecured driver floor mat is unsafe IN ANY CAR. I've had just such experiences with other cars over the years, where an unsecured mat has crept up and interfered with the accelerator, brake and clutch pedals. I had to push it down with my heel and tuck it close to the car seat.

My Prius has hooks on the mat. It isn't going anywhere. And nobody is going to shorten my accelerator pedal, which is distinctly unsafe for shorter drivers--like me.

The problem is with the Government, which should have a law REQUIRING HOOKS on driver floor mats.

No federal regulation is necessary, imo. You can't promulgate common sense.

"I'm Oprah rich baby!", was the only thing former Priuschat.com owner Danny Cooper was quoted as saying after the deal was announced. According to sources close to the site, Priuschat moderators are "looking for their payday" as well as looking for Mr. Cooper.

You totally gave in much too easily, Doug. You really should have strung the whole thing out.

Heck, it would have been good if Danny would have made it an announcement and written some blurb about how it's been fun these last six years but it's time to move on, blah blah blah.

All the same, you got me looking.

Oh, I so wanted to do that, but with all that's gone on recently, I think there's enough grief from our fans. Figured it was better to get in, have a laugh, and get out!

Call me the eternal optomist . . . you wouldn't happen to mean the early release of the PHEV Prius to the general public in just a few short weeks, would you?
