Is Full Green Battery Bad?

    I recently moved into a hilly location and everyday numerous times during my commute the battery gauge is full green and I hear the whirling noise of the full battery. I tried other routes but I get the same result, its just too hilly? Is this bad?

    I too get a full green more often then I used to. Even without hilly terrian it bounces back and foth between full blue and green with one short of being full. I don't remember getting green so often when i first got the car.

    No not at all. Green is good! Remember a "full" HV battery is in fact no more than 80% full.

    I had an "empty" i.e. no bars, HV the other day (I had been playin in the car too long :lol: The car still started and ran normally. "empty" isnt empty, just like "full" isnt full.

    I'd consider it neither good nor bad, just a SOC. If, however, it is getting so full that you're getting ICE fire up/cycling to burn off that charge then it is less efficient than not getting the battery that high.

    Sometimes you can alter your driving to minimize the 'over filling' of the battery when you learn your route and can drive to leave a lower SOC just before a long downhill section. You can try to avoid braking (when safe to do so), but sometimes it's unavoidable and it's not something you should worry about as being bad for your car.

    When the battery reaches its maximum allowed SOC you won't get any more regen. That means that you are not recapturing energy that you otherwise would. Energy wasted is bad.

    However, this is not bad for the car. The car knows when to limit charging & discharging and it takes very good care of itself.

    The only real solution would be a bigger battery, but as there is no way for you to put a bigger battery in, just think of it as one of the car's limitations, and don't worry about it. As battery technology improves, future models will have more capacity.

    So still not decided.

    Given a choice between all green, blue or red, give me green anyday as then I know I have full electro power if I need the boost to overtake or get out of a potential "sticky situation".

    In normal driving you are actually best at 4 bars. That way you have plenty of charge if you need to floor it, and you have plenty of head room to take advantage of regen. However, driving conditions may dictate otherwise. Approaching a long downhill you'd be better off at 0 bars, to maximize regen on the downhill; and approaching a long uphill you'd be better at 8 bars to lengthen the distance during which the motor can help the ice.

    Battery level is neither inherently good or bad, it's simply a SOC (state of charge/mind?)

    I thought I was imagining things but I think I'm getting more times I see the greeen bars too. This is right after the fuel tank/meter TSB. I've only had it a day but it was green more often, easier, and when I really didn't expect it. I also have to neutralize that darn backup beeper that was turned on after the TSB.

    Fred, that's what i was talking about too. I see green bars more often when i don't expect it. Even when the land is flat. It seems like the ICE is charging the battery more often or maybe i am just more use to the car and let it coast longer to a stop at traffic lights and such???????

    Yeah all of a sudden my car is doing the same thing, or is it my imagination? I'll have to drive it some more and see I think. Oh and the dealer somehow lost one of the wheels covers while doing the TSB!

    I'll check this myself - one thing I *have* noticed since the TSB for the fuel gauge, my glovebox light is *orange* now instead of a typical yellow - anyone else get this?
