I do not want to blow 'big bucks' on a THULE roof rack, is there an aftermarket ROOFRACK that will fit the prius?

Get a 59" Saris roof rack on E-bay if you can find one!

My choice would be to blow the big bucks on the Yakima. ;)

Seriously though, cheaping out on the roof rack is not something I'd recommend. And the only thing I can think of is to crack the windows and tie a rope through the windows and across the roof.

I am very happy with my Saris racks and they are cheaper than the Thule/Yakima option. Unfortunately they are extremely hard to find.

Depending on what you're trying to carry, some padding and straps through the doors can work fine. But if it's a bicycle, or you're doing a long trip on the highway, then a more permanent solution will be required.

Not to hijack, but does anyone use a rear carrier for bikes? Perhaps like a saris bones, or...is there a hitch carrier??? (Don't have a Prius yet so I don't know how people carry bikes)

    Yes.

I also carry bikes on the roof, inside the car, and on a trailer.

Nice road bike!!! I hard a hard time looking at the rack since that carbon Scott was (nicely) in my way!!

When I get my Prius, I'll definitely look into that rack. Looks to me like a better set up than on top.

Thanks! I like it too. :)

Advantages and disadvantages to all four of the ways I carry bikes.

The back is easy to load, and you don't hit the roof of your garage by accident. You don't need to lift the bikes over your head. But it makes it hard to get into the hatch, and they're easy for somebody to fool with when you are parked. I haul my bikes in the way that makes the most sense for the trip I'm taking. If I'm going to park in the "big city" I put them inside, or at least up on the roof. If I'm just going to the trail, they go on the back. If I'm camping and taking the trailer anyway (or taking the tandem anywhere) they go on the trailer.
