Well, after watching the value of my 2006 Prius continue in free-fall (the real value - what a stealership would give me in trade) I finally made a deal and traded it for a 2009 Mazda 6. Blame the press all you want, but I blame Toyota - had they not hidden facts and been much more forthright, I believe this situation would have passed quickly with little impact. (Interestingly, one of the lowest quotes I received for a trade-in was from the Toyota dealer)

I have enjoyed this forum - it is extremely active with a lot of very informative people. I may check in from time to time to see how it is going. The best of luck to everyone!

    Which situation?

Your timing of when to sell is unfortunate.

Popularity of the 2010 was bound to cause value of the previous generation to fall. With the first winter for it coming to an end and the first year almost complete, its worth is being well proven.

"Buy high, sell low" is not the winning strategy. Now is the time to be BUYing a Prius.

Hey good call P/L. Buy high and sell low. Now you'll be able to repeat that all over again in 5 years time when gas prices go though $8.00 per gallon and no one wants to touch a non-hybid or non-electric car.

Oh well, at least you'll be safe from all the unintended acceleration issues that the rest of us are (not) experiencing.

Well....I didn't complain when my 04 and 05 kept it's value so well that I could trade it in for what I still owed on my loan and got a new car every 1 or 2 years (something I've never done before) so I'm not gonna complain now that my Prius actually loses value like every other car. Now I'll see the other side of the Prius.....A high mileage one LOL!

    I wish you well.

Having lived in Denver for 27 years, I can tell you that Denver car dealers are notorious for trade-in value. That's why Thrifty Nickel is so busy. I got Blue Book one time only because the salesman was a good friend.

And we will have to agree to disagree as I believe Toyota has done all it could do when the media start their feeding frenzy. You can't win- if you apologize, the media take it as weakness. If you fight back they take it as a challenge to their authority.

Guys. Lay off. A person has made a decision. It was his decision to make and it is not your position to criticize him for it.

PriusLewis. Thanks for the time you've put into the Priuschat community. You will always be welcomed and I hope this is not the last time we hear from you. Good luck to you moving forward and I hope you are happier with your new car.

In the US it is actually legal to keep a car until it wears out. One can save tens of thousands that way.

The car dealers aren't the best place to trade in. Every time I tried trading in my auto's they told me to go to Carmax, and I'd get a better price

Wow, the [IMG] comments here are kind of disappointing. Enjoy the Mazda6 and drop by and say hi once in a while.

I'd steer clear of Toyotas, my last one I bought for $17,000 and sold for $2,000. Pretty heavy hit on depreciation. Of course than was over 14.5 years of near trouble free motoring.

I also had a 92 Mazda 626 which I bought secondhand with over 300,000 kilometres on it, it was stollen and I got more from the insurance than I paid for it but I did have the auto trans reconditioned just before which cost about $2,000 at mates rates.

    Enjoy the Mazda.

I did something similar with my Ford. The original sticker price was $28,000, and I only got $1,500 when I sold it 15 years later. I guess both of us are bad with money.

He started a thread, on a site called PriusChat, about how he sold his Prius, and the post included an unsubstantiated opinion. To say that people cannot comment or criticize is pretty absurd.

Doesn't sound like a good "investment" . I think I belong in the same Club: bought new Honda Accord in 1987 for $17.2K and sold it 12 yrs or 258,000 kms later for $2.8K ... but it was all in CDN$s! ;)

Enjoy your new car, always fun to get one! I loved my Mazda RX-7 back in 1981 and it gave me little trouble. Perhaps your next car after the new Mazda will be a plug-in Prius, skipping a generation is not such a bad thing! In any case fare well and happy motoring!
