It's official, Toyota sells one millionth Prius in the U.S.

Here's my blog entry about this news:

This is quite a milestone to achieve. Here in the United States, we hit the million mark until yesterday. (Last October, the official sales tally was 2,000,000 Prius worldwide.) Looking back, it was quite a journey. I had no idea when I bought my Classic there would be so many misconceptions and so much focus on guzzling. But then again, gas was less than $1 and we weren't actively fighting any wars in oil-producing nations.

When I upgraded to the Iconic model, things went from bad to worse. The monster-size vehicles had taken over and there was an intense anti-hybrid campaign underway.

Following that struggle came the 2010 upgrade. We were in the midst of bankruptcy recoveries and a smear campaign. What a mess.

Fortunately, throughout all of that, Prius remained true to the effort to reduce both emissions & consumption in a reliable way at an affordable price. We get a model with a plug next year, taking yet another step forward with Prius. I can't wait!

I wonder if the person that bought the one millionth Prius knew it and got any special attention? How cool would that have been to know that you were purchasing the milestone car

 

$2.19 billion stayed in the US and did not go to the unfriendly oil producing countries. Since Prius is cordless, it consumed zero electricity produced mostly by coal, nuclear and natural gas.

 

Anyone have a large phone booth?

I hope Toyota gave the one millionth customer a free Prius. They deserve it for giving Toyota all this publicity.

 

^^^^ Perhaps, but the 1 millionth wouldn't exist without the 999,999th, 999,998th, so on and so forth.

Let's give ourselves a pat on the back.

 

If your Prius was manufactured in Feb 2011, you'll could be that lucky person.

 

Sadly those of us who bought our babies used do not count toward that figure . The used Prius owners did something even better we reused our Prii and we all know reduce, reuse recycle.

 

One Million Prii sold in the US?!!! That's a lot of Prii!

And yet sadly? I still have friends that will look at me and proclaim that Hybrids "aren't ready yet"....

Nightly Business Report on 4/6/11 misreported it. They failed to mention that the 1 million number was for just for US Prius sales.

 

They actually had this in my local newspaper this morning, which is really unusual. The paper is owned by the NYTimes.

The article stated that the Prius was originally thought by many to be nothing more than an experiment by environmentalists and is now found to be a mainstream vehicle in the US

 

I remember a friend bought one of the first. He had it on order for months. It was way too small for our younger family but I was smitten with the concept from the start.
