Looks like a cool car... It's need cleaner diesel right? Is that available in all states?

 

It is still a Volkswagon.

USLD is not mandatory yet. Refineries must make at least 80% ULSD and 20% LSD but fuel stations do not have to carry ULSD unless they are in CARB states until December 2010. Alaska will not have any ULSD until December 2010 due to a special waver from the EPA. I have a 2003 TDI wagon and since ULSD was introduced in September 2006 I have found one station that had ULSD. It may vary by region or may just be a labeling thing but all the stations in my area still only carry LSD.

The new TDI Jetta Wagon is sweet though, but it will kill the value on my 2003. The wagons have been selling for $3K to $5K more than the sedan because VW discontinued them in 2005. Where else can you get that much room and 50 mpg.

 

I read on a VW forum a post from a person who stood next to one running that the new VW diesels are unbelievably quiet.

Since those MPG numbers reflect the new EPA rating system, I'm impressed. Toyota will need the rumored 08/09 Prius' higher mileage to compete.

I actually found the Pump Deuse to be louder than the TDI's, the TDI was a huge leap from the VW diesels I grew up around they removed the four s's of diesel - Smell(& Smoke), Shake, Sound, and Slow
Can't wait to try one of these out when they arrive!

 

If it doesn't idle in traffic, I might be interested.

we finally cleared the roads of those nasty Mercedes diesel wagons which were so trendy before SUVs and now this. Question: I am under the assumption that diesel is less refinery-intensive than gasoline, so why is diesel priced so high?

You must be talking about the 80's wagons, because the new Mercedes diesels are SWEET. I've had the pleasure of driving both the C-Class and E-Class wagons in Germany and have routinely got 35mpg at 120 + mph.

It is less refinery-intensive because it is a larger molecule and requires less carbon cracking. In my area, diesel is currently $2.53 / gallon compared to regular at $3.02 / gallon so I would say it's a deal at the moment. As someone that records and charts fuel prices, diesel changes seasonally. In my area, diesel is generally less than regular is the summer and more than premium in the winter.
