I was under the impression that with the onboard computers that you would not have to idle you vehicle for the test (the last test I had on my 01 nissan they just plugged into the OBC and the info was downloaded).

If that doesn't work turn the heat all the way up and turn on the front defroster. That should make the car stay on. I beleive I read somewhere to do this for valets so they don't think the car has stalled, or forget to shut it off when they park it.

    Hmph...

Now what we need is "how to convince government that the Prius doesn't need to be tested in the first place..."

Has anyone measured the ICE RPMs if the car is put in Park (in the READY mode) and then you press on the accelerator pedal (maybe half way to the floor)? Is it 1500, 2200, or something else? Also, what are the RPMs if you press the pedal further and the ICE changes to a higher speed?

The Prius is exempt from emissions testing in Colorado. This saves me $1 a month! ($25 every two years for testing otherwise).

In Northern Virginia, cars are tested at idle and at 35 mph. We have clogged roads here and garbage coming out of the Congress. VA believes in more interstates but, MD doesn't--gridlock!!

Actually Maryland supports a beltway bypass, but wants to build it on the east side of DC. Virginia on the other hand wants to build it on the west side of DC. Until they come to a consensus, nothing will be built.

How do you get the car to idle for the test?

To get the Prius to maintain a steady idle
(such as for emission testing) follow this procedure:

The following must be done within 60 seconds:

    1)Ignition on (not READY mode)
    2)Vehicle in Park
    3)Step on accelerator pedal twice
    4)Place vehicle in Neutral
    5)Step on accelerator pedal twice
    6)Place vehicle in Park
    7)Step on accelerator pedal twice
8)Place car in READY mode.....ICE WILL RUN continuously (see rpms below)

A warning icon on the MFD will be displayed.
With less than 60% throttle applied.....idle is 1500 RPM (approx)
With more than 60% throttle applied.....idle is 2250 RPM (approx)

As per the KB and repair manual, you are right twdusa. What I was thinking about was base idle. It is set at 1000 RPM's with no depression of the accelerator in Inspection Mode. Accel applied under 60% is 1500 RPM's for all Prius' but over 60% is different. The 1st gen is 2250 RPM's and the 2nd gen is 2500 RPM's. How you get to the Inspection Mode is the same for all years.
