International Truck and Engine Corporation and Eaton Corporation have been selected to manufacture diesel-electric hybrid trucks for a US national pilot programme serving the utility industry. The programme will test a minimum of 20 factory-built International utility trucks featuring an integrated hybrid powertrain solution jointly developed by the two companies.

Very interesting. I believe that some really good potential lies in trucks like those in the article, mail delivery trucks, buses, and other start-and-stop vehicles. To that end, here's an article indicating that FedEx has alreay put hybrid trucks into their fleet.

Large trucks especially garbage trucks have a big potiental for some major fuel savings, pollution reduction, and reduced wear and tear. I heard somewhere that the average garbage truck is over 10 years old, and gets less than 3 mpg.
