The dealer told me that my 2006 Prius with 74,000 miles has a leaky left axle seal and it would cost ~ $470 to replace it. The cost of the unit is $15 and rest is labor (Chicago). Is this a reasonable quote? Can a local mechanic do the job or should I get this done by the Toyota techs?

    Any inputs are greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

The price is high but seems normal for dealer service. A local mechanic can do the work.

I recommend that you ask the mechanic to disconnect the 12V battery before starting work, to avoid causing problems to the skid control ECU and the brake system.

Hmm, perhaps the price is going down now. My dealer gave me a quote of $340 for the same problem on my 2006 prius - and with the 15% costco discount, should go down to $290.
